Should kids in grades K-12 be required 6 hours of community service a year??

today during RSVP one of our questions was, should kids in grades K-12 be required 6 hours of community service a year? What do you think about this question? I think its a great idea because its not hard to get that many hours and its only 6 hours a year.

    if they are forced to do community service, kids will be more defiant rather than agreeing to do it

    I think it would be a good idea to get the day off from school to do it. I wouldnt want to do it on my own time though.

    Volunteering means that someone chose to help out. Forcing students to volunteer isn't volunteering at all. The only time anyone should do any community service is if they either want to or are punished after committing a crime. I'd like to ask the administration why they're making students do what convicts do. School is becoming even more like a prison.
    Not a good idea in my opinion. There are better ways to go about promoting community service.

    I like the idea of helping out our community but 6 hours? I think that is to much, more like 3-4 would be great. Because we are busy with jobs and homework. If you could do it during the summer and it would count would be better.

    I guess I wouldn't mind because for student council we are required to have what, 3 or 4 hours of community service per quarter? It would be easy and it would be a good way for the students to get into the community more.

    I think it's a great idea. Most people are concerned that they won't be able to get that many hours a year so I think it would be a great idea if we had community service days. People are also concerned that kindergarten is too young for something like that but another idea is to pair a younger student with an older one. There are a lot of things to consider when talking about this subject.

    I think that it would be a great way to expose kids to volunteerism and it would also be a great way to show kids that helping others is very important.

    I dont think this is a bad idea, its acutally a pretty good idea. It is a good thing out to help out your community. It would be cool that each grade have a community service day and then be done with it.

    i dont think they should have to do 6 hours of community service.
