A recent study shows that between 1% to 12% of highschool boys and between .5% to 3% of highschool girls have admitted to taking steroids to increase their strength for a sport. Imaging the amount of highschool athletes that didn’t admit to the use of steroids the percentages are probably higher than you would think. Mandatory drug testing is not part of the law in Iowa so it is hard to catch someone who is using steroids. Although the school can do random tests, schools hardly ever do them, especially to athletes. This is cheating and against the rules, it is unfair to the students who follow the rules and don’t use steroids to get stronger. The ones who take it have an unfair advantage over the ones who don’t.
It is however legal to do drug tests on high school students. Why is it that hardly any students are drug tested even if they are under suspicion of the use of drugs? Is it that schools are too afraid to get their best player on the team in trouble? Do they just let it go because they benefit the team even though they are cheating? Some states have mandatory drug tests for students in sports and extracurricular classes.
I think that it shouldn't be mandatory to do drug tests in schools in Iowa. Even though the testing is not mandatory I think they need to do drug tests to students who they think could possibly be taking steroids or some type of testosterone booster.
Do you think that drug testing for athletes should be mandatory?
Do you think they need to do more random testing for athletes they think could be taking steroids.
Do you think there is a reason they don’t do these random tests? If so why?

Interesting topic and very well done William!
I think that there should only be drug test if they really think that someone is using steroids but they shouldn't just test everybody becasue a lot of them proably arent and that would take a long time to drug test the whole team of every sport.
I really don't think that high schoolers should be drug tested, it may seem like an invasion of privacy to some players players. I think that there should be more random testing for student-athletes that may be taking performance-enhancing drugs. Im not sure if there is any reason why they don't do random tests that often.
I agree I don't see why they don't do any drug test for students today because it would help students think twice before they start one.
I don't think drug tests should be mandatory but, there should be more of them to make sure no one is cheating or using steroids to get stronger. I think it is possible that schools don't do random drug tests because it could get rid of their best player.
I personaly think that they should maybe do one before a game or in the mornings, maybe once every two weeks or so. I am not an athlete so I dont know how they would feel and if they think it would be unfair to them if someone on their team was cheating, I know I would think that.
I think that if they do start doing drug tests for highschool athletes that it shouldn't be everyday or week, I think it should be like once a month or so. I think that if a athlete is suspected of taking steroids then they should be tested just to make sure they aren't.
I agree I think that if they did start doing drug test it shouldn't be that often. I also agree that if they suspect someone is taking steroids they should be tested.
I think that it would be a no brainer to be drug testing athletes for steroids but nothing else. It is not any of the schools business what the kid might be doing outside of school but using steroids for a better performance is bad so that should be tested only. Well it should be as random as possible so that the people on steroids dont know what is coming when they are tested.
In my opinion, I do not think that testing athletes for drugs should be mandatory. However, I think random testing is a decent idea. I think it would stop more athletes from doing drugs, which will lead to a decrease in the percent of people that use drugs. I do not think schools are going to put in the time and money in order to do random drug testing all the time. I think they can put that money into a better program or activity.
