Should Greg McDermott be fired?

Greg McDermott was recently suspended indefinitely from coaching for the Creighton Basketball team after what people took as a racial slur he had said in the locker room after a loss. He offered to resign from coaching because of his comments. He said his players did not ask for him to resign. The decision to suspend him happened two days after the incident.

McDermott said that when he apologized he saw the pain in the players faces and it hurt him. In the locker room after the loss McDermott said “Guys, we got to stick together. We need both feet in. I need everybody to stay on the plantation. I can't have anybody leave the plantation.” He then made a tweet saying that what he said should have a consequence and he agrees with the suspension.

I don’t think McDermott should be fired because I don’t think he meant it the way people took it. This is also the only time he had ever said anything like this. I think the suspension is a good consequence.

Do you think Doug McDermott should be fired?

  • when I first had read what he had stated I was like is that racist, then I took another look and I can kinda see how people would take this the wrong way. But he is a great coach and I think the consequence is fair considering his actions. But I don't think he meant it in the way that everyone is taking it. it's a misunderstanding and he is getting punished for it so I think fair is fair.

  • HA! No I do not think he should be fired let alone suspended indefinitely! He said something and people assumed the worse and didn't even consult him on what he exactly meant and just thought the worse. He didn't say anything racists and couldv'e been misunderstood, but after having so many cases like this he just gave up because he knew nobody would care about the truth at all. The hurt in their faces could be that they know that he was a good coach and he has never said anything like that and they felt bad for assuming the worse. He thought they were truly hurt so he decided to resign, but instead they have to make a big deal about this and said suspension indefinitely. It could've been just a misunderstanding and they were giving such a harsh punishment for a few words that could've been misunderstood and it was his first time saying stuff like that doesn't that just prove that being misunderstood is higher % than racism. He immediately agreed with the consequences because now he feels bad for saying something that made him misunderstood and make the players be dissapointed in him. He was a coach and respects his players for trying their best during the game, but of course he was disappointed that they lost, but that doesn't mean that he would hurt them with that one sentence!

  • I don't think he should be fired. All though he shouldn't have used the word he did, he didn't mean it to be racist. He also apologized to his team and they all don't want him to be fired.

  • I dont think he should be fired from coaching. Now with thatbeing said does that mean I think it is ok what he said absoulty not. What he said wasn't right. but like you said earlier this is the first time he has ever said something like this so I dont think he should be fired. Now if this were to happen for a second time i think that would be a different story.

  • I don't think I should be fired It was a single mistake if everyone who makes a small mistake gets fired a lot of people would not have jobs. I think he should get a second chance and if he makes a mistake like this again then he should probably be fired.

    • I also don't think he should be fired because it was a mistake and he had naver made a mistake like that affecting his job like that before and I think that he uis lucky that his consequences weren't worse.  I also think if he makes this kind of mistake there should be further concequences.

  • I personally think that Greg Mcdermott shouldn't be fired but rather serve a suspension. I believe even though he said some terrible stuff he should still be off the hook because he has already apologized and talked to his player about if they wanted him to resign or not. I don't think theirs much more he could do to show how apologetic he is.

  • I think that weather he should be fired or not should be up to the players. What he said was wrong and offensive however, I believe he handled it the right way in saying that he would resign and by agreeing with his suspension. He knows he was in the wrong and apologized and though that doesn't compensate for what was said, it was a large step in the right direction.

  • I really don't understand the situation. It just seems weird that he would just make that reference. Maybe there is more to the story in articles but now it just seems like an odd thing to say. I don't get why anyone would have a reason to say that. Its unnecesarry and he could have easily made a different reference, but again I don't really know what he meant because it's just odd.

  • I don't think he should be fired, but I don't think it was the greatest thing to say. But he quickly responded and apoligized so I don't think he should be fired but I think he should think of what he said and could have rephrased it a little better.
