Greg McDermott was recently suspended indefinitely from coaching for the Creighton Basketball team after what people took as a racial slur he had said in the locker room after a loss. He offered to resign from coaching because of his comments. He said his players did not ask for him to resign. The decision to suspend him happened two days after the incident.
McDermott said that when he apologized he saw the pain in the players faces and it hurt him. In the locker room after the loss McDermott said “Guys, we got to stick together. We need both feet in. I need everybody to stay on the plantation. I can't have anybody leave the plantation.” He then made a tweet saying that what he said should have a consequence and he agrees with the suspension.
I don’t think McDermott should be fired because I don’t think he meant it the way people took it. This is also the only time he had ever said anything like this. I think the suspension is a good consequence.
Do you think Doug McDermott should be fired?

I don't think because of one big mistake he should be fired it was a very bad mistake but it was a forgive able one. I think he should get a second chance and shouldn't get fired. all people should get a second chance it's just the right thing.
Yes, he should be fired they were no reason for him to say that even with his apology it doesn't fix what he said. He made a big reference to slavery and obviously it affected the team. Even though he did feel really bad and "he saw the fear in their eyes after he said it" won't change the fact he said it you can't take that back i don't think he should have been suspended he should have been fired.
I strongly disagree with you. He had said a phrase that only is said when talking about slavery. He sounded like an owner talking to his slaves. That is wrong. He deserved that punishment, and I'm glad he knows he shouldn't have said that. There is no excuse to telling a team that. Not only to his team, but the black members on the team. This is so disrespectful.
I definantly don't think that he shoudl be fired although his actions were wrong he owned up to it and said he was very sorry to his players. I also don't think he should be fired because he accepted his concequence properly and was very responsible with the whole situation.
I agree. I don't think tht he meant it in a racist way at all, but that is how some people interpreted it. He came out and said that he understood and would accept concequences, and even offered to resighn from coaching if the players felt like he should be fired.
I don't think that he should be fired but he should definitely be punished. I think that this goes along with cancel culture too much. I believe that people should be given more than one chance, especially since it was just a one time thing. I also think it is possible that people took it the wrong way or he didn't mean it the way it happened.
I do not think he should be fired because he clearly did not mean it in a racist way. He also has apologized and knows it was wrong what he said and knows he should not of said it. He even offered to quit his job because of his own comment so he clearly knows what he said was wrong so i do not think he should be fired.
I dont' think that McDermott should be fired. He has a good relationship with his players and they don't want him fired. I do agree that he should be suspended for a few days because it's not right to say racist comments, but he shouldn't be fired from it.
I don't think he should be fired because he is a really good coach but he should be suspended for a long time before he is able to come back to the team. He definetly didn't mean it in the way it sounded but you can't really say that stuff in todays world.
I think that he should be suspended, but just for a few weeks, not a long time. I agree that you can't get away with saying stuff like that in today's world, but I think people blew it way out of proportion and interpreted it the wrong way.
