E-Sports May Be at the Olympics

E-sports, or competitive multiplayer video games, are a popular form of entertainment. This year, revenue from the industry is expected to reach $906 million, 38% more than in 2017, according to research firm Newzoo. This past week, e-sports, were exhibition sports at the Asian Games. At the next Asian Games in 2022, e-sports are going to be a medal event, and the IOC, International Olympic Committee, stated they may be added to the Olympics eventually. They even organized a forum on the video games, including questions on whether or not e-sports can be considered a sport. However, the issue of violent video games has arisen. Thomas Bach, the president of the IOC, stated games promoting "violence or any kind of discrimination" aren't suitable for the Olympics.

How do you think e-sports at the Olympics would affect views?

Considering e-sports have such a wide audience and are expected to be a $1.5 billion industry in 2020, I think the Olympics would gain a lot of new viewers. However, it definitely depends on the games being played. For example, not everyone would want to watch a League of Legends tournament, just like how some people wouldn't want to watch a boxing match.

How do you think violent video games could be modified to be suitable for the Olympics? Do you think the violence should be removed?

The game developers could create alternate versions of their games that are less violent, like to remove gore. However, most violent e-sports are considered to have "cartoon violence," like the Super Smash Bros. franchise. I'm not sure if this cartoon violence would be considered too violent, but removing the violent aspects of some video games would completely ruin the game. I believe that the cartoon violence doesn't need to be altered, but more violent games, like Call of Duty, should be toned down.

  • Great job Evan!

  • Many who appeciate more traditional sports probably wouldn't be all that happy and would tune out to these sections of the games. I do believe that some people would try and watch to see what it's all about.

I don't believe violent games should necessarily be baned, but I do believe that modifying them wouldn't be the answer. Now, there are games out there with violence and gore, but if you showed a competitive game that was very obviously not trying to promote violence and more of just competitive fun, then I don't see a problem with it.

  • I think e-sports at the Olmpics would be interesting to some people that are interested in that suff. But I wouldn't watch the e-sports. I watch the Olympics to watch people compete in real physical activity sports. So the e-sports might get a lot of veiws, just not mine. I think that less violet versions of the games could be used. I think that the violence should be removed, so it doen't iinfluence people/children.

  • I think it would cintact more people to the olympics because so many people are instrested in video games. yes some games could be motified. i think the violece should be removed because it can cause violence while playing the game.

  • I would personally think that a lot more people would tune into the olympics each year if e-sports entered the scene, but at the same time I wouldn't think it would be a huge difference considering how many people watch the olympics anyways. I believe that the removal of violent games is understandable considering the circumstances, but I believe some violence should be allowed AKA the stuff that is suitable for kids, not something with blood and very obvious killing.

    • A lot of people definitely watch the Olympics, but video games reach out to a different demographic, so I agree with you on the fact that views would have an increase. The violence that is suitable for younger audiences shouldn't be removed, like you said, because a lot of games have this "cartoony violence," and removing it would change the game for the worse.

  • I thinks that e-sports at the Olympics would be a great upgrade to the Olympics. One reason I think it would be great to add e-sports to the Olympics is because the Olympics would get a lot more views. Also, there would be very good competition at the Olympics. I belive that violent video games are sutible for the Olympics because you have fencing and boxing which is violence just like some of these violent video games. So I belive that violent video games should be fine for the Olympics.

    • You're right, violence is already at the Olympics, so violence in video games shouldn't necessarily have to be removed. However, extremely violent/gory games should be toned down a bit, like Mortal Kombat. Viewership would definitely increase, since a lot of the younger people that don't watch the Olympics normally would probably want to see video games.

    • I agree with you, video games have been booming recently, with games like Pokemon Go and Fortnite attracting audiences that wouldn't normally play video games. Your point on boxing is very true. Not only would nobody be getting hurt in real life, but other sports at the Olympics do this. They would have to put a disclaimer before the game, though, so younger audiences are warned.

  • I think e-sports bringing the video games into the Olympics would be a great way to get more views because this day and age more people would be more intrested in video games because everyone plays them.
