Should Drinking Age Be Lowered?

As everyone knows the legal drinking age in America is 21. Although, in many countries the drinking age is either 16 or 18. Such as Cuba, Panama, and more, legalize drinking for 16 and older. In France, Canda, Mexico, Italy, and many more, the legal age is 18. Many people have their own thoughts on what age is appropriate for drinking alcohol.

I feel that the drinking age in America should be lowered to 18. Once you turn 18 you’re by law considered an adult. If you’re legally able to live on your own, buy a house, and go into the military at that age you should be able to make the choice to drink or not. If America lowered its drinking age to 18, it would join the 61 percent of the countries that have the drinking age of 18 or 19.

Other people think that it should stay legal for people that are 21 and older. One of the reasons why people think it should stay the same is because they think that drinking under 21 links to many immature decisions like car crashes, suicide, and alcohol poisoning. I disagree with them because you should be able to know your limits and know when to make the right decisions.

In conclusion, the drinking age in America should be lowered to 18 because you should be able to make your own decision and take responsibility for your own actions.

Do you think the drinking age should be lowered? Why or why not?

  • I think the drinking age should be lowered because at 18 you get so many more privileges such as owning or renting a house or apartment. Or even joining the military. I believe that if you can do those things you should be able to drink.

  • I believe the drinking age should be lowered from21 to 18. If you are legally an adult I believe you should be able to decide whether or not you want to drink alcohol. The biggest issue in America for lowering the drinking age is the car crashes due to intoxication which is a big problem.

  • Yes, becasue there would be less MIP's and people getting in trouble. If you are able to join the military and have a chance of getting killed, you should be able to drink alcohol at 18 years old.

  • i think if your considerd an adult you should be able to make your own choices. but icould have effects on brain development and may lead to more problems with addiction.

    • Yes, I agree with the part you said that you're considered an adult. You're brain stops developing at the age of 25, so either way when you start drinking at 21 it's still not fully developed.

  • I think it should be lowered because when you are 18, you are an adult. Lots of people would like this because there is a lot of illegal drinking already and this would help teens. I think when you are 18 you are responsible enough to be able to drink alcohol.

    • I agree with what you said. It could potienally stop underage drinking or atleast have a decreased on it.

  • I am in the middle of this decision because there are already so many underage drinkers so changing the age limit would not do much since there are already a lot of underage drinkers. Drinking underage also affects the brain and can stunt growing. I do think if we lower the age limit most teens would get less tickets for having alcohol under the legal age.

  • I think it should be lowerd to 18 becuase you are legal an adult andyou have to take responsibilty. Also it would effect the brain develop becuase the brain stops developing mid 20s.

  • I think that the drinking age should not be lowered. While it would bring down arrests and tickets for minors having alcohol it would also stunt the brain's growth and development. I also believe thatno minor should be drinking alcohol.
