Should college be a priority?

College graduates earn 80% more than non-college graduates. However, only 51% of people in America see college as important. In 2009, the Obama administration wanted to increase the amount of 25-34 year olds with college degrees or certificates to 60% by 2020. At the rate we are going, it would take until 2056 to reach this goal. The United States’ economy is dependent on the educational success of Americans. Without sufficient workers to complete the work needed to keep America running, we would ultimately fall to poverty.

One reason college has been pushed off for students is because of cost, which has increased by 25% just over this decade. The increased costs has put student debt in America at its peak. This alone is causing the importance of college in kids’ minds to drop significantly. However, having a college education increases the pay you make by a ton compared to someone who doesn’t graduate from college. So while you may spend a few years paying off student loans, you will be making more money in the long run.

Another reason students’ have seemed to lose interest in college is because of millionaires like Mark Zuckerberg or Bill Gates who are both college dropouts. These few exceptions cause kids to believe that they can make it just fine without a college education. While yes, it is true that you can make a good living without a college degree, you would be able to live more comfortably with one.

Without college education, our country will lack skilled workers and our economy will be hurt. While we can live without a college degree, it is important to our society. College isn’t a necessity for individuals, but our economy will continue to grow and flourish with college degrees.

  • I think college shouldntbe a priority for some students. For instance alot of famous people have made it far in life without completing school. im not saying you have to be like lil pump or something what im saying is that college shouldnt be a major concern for some people because although college can create more job options for you. you can still have a decent income from working other places without a college degree.

  • I feel like college is a good option for some students, but for others, it could not be an option. For some people who want to go into things like mechanics or something like it, college might not be the greatest option whereas trade school might be better. I have been interested in going to college since I was little and love school. I plan on going to college because of the career I want to go into.  I feel like college might be a better option for some people, but like I said before, college might not be the best option for others.

    • I totally agree with you because everyone is different in what they want to pursue and like you said, college might not be the best for someone who is a really good mechanic. Everyone is smart, they just have to choose the right path so they can use their smartness.

  • I think you should be able to get a good job with or without college, just if you go to college you could get in a higher position much quicker.  I think I will go to college because then I can get a "pen pusher job," and get paid much better and then it would look better on my job application.

  • I don't think that college should be our number one priority. So many people go to college for degrees that won't actually help them in life just because they feel pressured to go to college. I know many people with english degrees who actually went into engineering or entreprenuered a new buisness. They have the degree because everybody said they needed a degree to amount to anything, but the degree actually made it harder for them to find work because companies would have had to pay them more because of his qualifications.

  • I don't think college should be a priority. I think that if you want to go to college you can. Some people aren't able to afford college and they can't get scholoships like others. If they have to money to afford it they can do it if they want.

  • Good topic choice and well done overall! Be sure to comment a bot more.

  • I think that if someone wants to go to college they should be able to but they have to work for it and if they are trying and still not doing good I think they should stilll get the chance to go to college if they have to the money to afford it however I don't think that everybody wants to go to college but if they do they should be able to have the chance.

  • I feel that college is very over hyped and should not be seen as something that should be required to get a good job. Could it be recomended? sure, but I feel they push it to an extent that is too far. There are many job fields that require little schooling after highschool if any at all. I just think that highschool trys to tell you that you will never succed in life without going to college for 4+ years which just isnt true. The idea of college should be something that is seen as optional and not a requirment to succeed in life.

    • It was well said when you said it should be seen as optional and not a requirment to succeed in life because there are many millionaires and successful people that didn't go to college. Many of those people were entrepreneurs and created their own business.
