An estimated 26 million animals are used every year in the United States for scientific and commercial testing.  Animals are used to develop medical treatments, determine the toxicity of medications, check the safety of products destined for human use, and other biomedical, commercial, and health care uses. Research on living animals has been practiced since at least 500 BC.
Proponents of animal testing say that it has enabled the development of numerous life-saving treatments for both humans and animals, that there is no alternative method for researching a complete living organism, and that strict regulations prevent the mistreatment of animals in laboratories.
Opponents of animal testing say that it is cruel and inhumane to experiment on animals, that alternative methods available to researchers can replace animal testing, and that animals are so different from human beings that research on animals often yields irrelevant results.

  • David,

While I am glad you got this done, here are the issues:

    1. Be sure to include personal thoughts and opinions within your story.

    2. Be sure to include at leats two questions so students can reply to you.

    3. Be sure to add a hyperlink to your story.

    4. You didn't reply to any student comments which is worth 20 points.

  • I agree with using animals for testing purposes considering that there is no alternative method for reasearching a livings creature and as you said there are strict regulations that prevent the mistreatment of animals in testing environments.

  • I think that animal testing is wrong. Animals shouldn't be harmed for products. It is not safe if something were to happen they could kill the animal. I disagree with animal testing, I think that there is another way to do research other than testing on animals. The animals really have no choice, which is sad to torture them for humans. There should be another way to test medical treatments.

  • I agree with animal testing. There are many reasons why I think this but the main one is simply that for some to live some also need to die. Though it may be frowned upon by some people if we used animals, it would certainly be worrying if we used humans.

  • I do not agree with animal being used for scientific and commercial testing. I also think it is cruel and inhumane. I am a huge animal lover and I hate the fact that this happens. There should be another way they could test medicines out instead of using animals.

  • I'm against animals being used for this type of testing. Being able to develop new medicines is crucial, but these animals are being hurt and they aren't able to defend themselves. Using animals as a method of research and testing can be in some cases considered "safe" and "humane," but there are a lot of places that use them and end up hurting them in the process. We can find different ways to do research other than using animals.

  • I do not think that animals should be used for scientific or commercial testing because they are tested on without the animal having a choice. I understand that without animals being used for testing, we definitely would not have some of the products, treatments or medications that we have today, but I still do not think that it is right to test on defenseless animals.

  • I think using animals for our benefit is quite cruel. We should find other sources that could help test products, without hurting a living thing. I understand animals are able to provide medical treatments and such, but torturing them for testing is not okay in my opinion.

  • I think that if the testing is going to really help it can be done in a safe way without making the animal suffer. We should not hurt animals for any reason.  Animalsshould be treated with respect.
