Shipment Crisis

I never thought about the shipment of products and how they get to our stores, until now due to a shipment crisis around the world. This includes many different products such as toilet paper, hand sanitizer, foods, drinks, retail, etc. According to CNN, “There has been congestion at ports in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Europe, North America, and the west coast.” This congestion is spreading rapidly around the United States, starting in California with only 36 container ships anchoring off the adjacent ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. The highest number since February, when 40 container ships were waiting to enter the ports. Usually, you would see from 0-1 container ships at ports, so this is an example of how it has changed. The chances of shipment arriving on time is 40% when last year it was 80%. Due to all of the backlogging, there will be a shortage and added stress of trucks, railroads, and warehouse space. Not only ports are overcrowded, but air terminals are receiving vast amounts of supply from across the globe. “At the Chicago International Airport, there are delays up to 2 weeks to claim and baggage cargo,” stated Biesterfield, “Retailers are struggling to replenish goods and stock up for the holiday season.” So many companies had to change their shipment method of utilizing planes instead of boats. Covid was also a big effect on this crisis because it caused a lack of workers. Either they are sick with an illness, or they are fearful to step outside. A worldwide company such as Steve Madden shoes, said they were already missing out on sales because they don’t have enough goods. Overall, many businesses encourage people to shop early and get their products fast, otherwise when they walk into a store they will see empty shelves.

Has  this affected you personally and how?

Do you think this is something we will have to deal with for years?

  • This is a great topic choice and one that we need to discuss further in class. You did a great job replying to people! Your summary is pretty good but I would like to see you break your long paragraph into shorter paragraphs to make it more digestable for readers. Also, be sure to cite your sources.

  • Well, i think that one way it has effect me in financially, if you have gone to the store recently you might have notice the prices, i think everything is more expensive. I honestly think that the prices are going to go up. I mean the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

    • Yeeah I agree with you, supply and demand seems to be making a shift in supplies.

  • The shipment crisis hasn't affected me very much because it doesn't really affect me besides some packages aren't coming as fast as they usually do. It mainly will affect businesses and companie because they won't be able to get their products fast enough for the people need to buy or that other people need. I don't think this will take years to stop it but it will take more time because of the affects on our world right now.

    • And packages coming later seems to be the problem with everyone. And yeah I agree with you that businesses will struggle more, but if everyone is relying on online shopping, and its not going smoothly hopefully those people will turn to the smaller businesses again.

  • Personally the shipment crisis hasn't affected me very much besides the fact that I haven't gotten the things I order as fast as usual but that doesn't affect me as well. I don't think it will take years, but I do think it will take a year or so because everything has been affected.

    • Yeah I agree with you.

  • No, the shipment crisis has not effected me. I don't buy a lot of things online. So, there is really no way it would effect me. I have no clue if it has effected my parents or not yet. Maybe as the years go on, it will start to become normal again. We will have to see how this plays out.

    • Yup I agree.

  • The shipping crisis hasn't done much to affect me personally except for the delay for packages to arive...which seems like it takes forever now. No, I don' think we will continue to have problems with shipping for years to come but hopefully it gets fixed soon.
