Today, Monday, December 2, a fisherman died after a shark bit his foot in Maui. The man was kayaking with a partner less than three miles off the coast of Maui when he was bit. The spot was popular for diving and snorkeling. When he was bit, his partner tied a tourniquet on him and looked for a larger boat that could take them ashore.
The man was taken taken to a hospital, where it is unclear whether he was DOA or died later.
The man is anonymous and the kind of shark that bit him has not yet been identified. There have been eight shark attacks this year. On Friday, a woman received injuries in another attack.
"We are not sure why these bites are occurring more frequently than normal, especially around Maui," said department Chairman William Aila Jr. "That's why we are conducting a two-year study of shark behavior around Maui that may give us better insights."
What do you think provoked the sharks to bite? Why are they biting more? I don't know why this shark attacked, but it is a definite tragedy that this man died. I hope his family is okay.

Great job!!
Sharks are unpredictable. It could have been hungry or just bored, who knows. There could be something in the waters messing with their brains and desire to attack other living organisms. I definitely think it is worth the time to investigate the waters a bit more, and maybe another deadly shark attack like this one could be prevented from happening again.
From what I have heard, sharks normally bite out of curiosity. The boards that people rid can look like animal that a shark eats floating in the water.
I do not know why the sharks did this. It is terrible that the man died.
Sharks only act like this because we are invading their terrority. I wonder if this story will be on shark week.
Yeah, well I'd attack some random guy in speedos coming into my house and playing around, too.
I hope that the shark bite rate will decrease. I think maybe the sharks are just getting too used to people and coming up more toward the surface and getting closer, or maybe the sharks just think that the people on the kayaks or surf boards look like seals, so they attack them.
I don't know a lot about sharks so I have no idea why sharks bite people or act like this. It is just crazy how every year more and more people are dying from shark attacks. My guess is sharks don't like us human invading into their home.
Yeah well I don't like a lot of humans either, so I guess I can understand them.
I'm not sure what prompted the sharks to attack... It's very rare for a shark to attack a human and despite the increase in attacks lately... It's still just being in the wrong place at the wrong time
