The New Mexico State Senate took a vote on March 15, 2019 to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day. The proposal was passed 22-15. The proposal was already passed in the State House, and if the Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham is to sign the bill New Mexico would be the fourth state to get rid of the Holiday celebrating Christopher Columbus. The critics of the bill claim that the bill is only going to divide our country even more. There was a propasal in February to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day but the proposal was shot down. The celebration of Columbus has become a very controversial holiday over the years because it is believed that he did terrible things to the Native Americans once he got to the mainland. Now some cities are starting to honor the Indiginous Peope of their cities.

Do you believe that Iowa should begin this holiday? Why or why not?
I believe that Iowa should pass this law because of what Columbus did to the people who were here before us and because the Native Americans don't have a very large holiday like Columbus day.
If Iowa was to pass the bill, do you think people would be outraged? Why or why not?
I think that if Iowa was to pass the law some people would be angry and some people wouldn't I think people would be mad because they don't like the Native Americans and if they got a holiday they would be even more mad.

Great story choice and well done summary. You only replied once. -5 late
I think we should keep it the way it is. I do not know for sure if Columbus did do terrible things to Indians or not. If he did, then we should change the holiday to Ingenous Peoples Day. I don't think anyone would really care if Iowa passes the bill.
I don't really know how I would feel about this. Many people probably think that Columbus wasn't that great of a person and they could be right. If this were a bill in Iowa, I would say it should be passed because it's a controversial subject. I think there would be some people who are unhappy about it, but I don't really know if anyone celebrates the holiday. I wouldn't be opposed to the idea of this bill.
I don't think we should rename the holiday, our country is already divided enough we don't need even more controversy. I don't think many people would care because Columbus day is not a big holiday like Christmas and is not that many people even celebrate Columbus day.
I agree I think our country is already divided enough and if we were to rename the holdiday it would just divide us even more than we are now. I kind of agree with you about the people not really caring because its not a super big holdiday, but knowing how people are they would just get mad to get mad and that would turn out in a bunch of people arguing.
Yes I believe replacing Columbus Day with a day for the indegenous people would be a good thing to do because thy were actually the first people in America. No I think people would understand, and realize that their should be a day for the people who first discovered America.
1. i dont really care as i dont care about colombus day really i mean its one of those holidays thats just exists for some reason
2.i feel like the only people who would get mad would be racists who dont want native americans to have a holiday considering no one really celebrates columbus day
I don't have a very strong opinion on this topic, but if it came down to me, I would change the holiday. Columbus was a terrible human being and did terrible things. It just doesn't seem right to have a holiday about a person that murdered and raped numerous groups of people.
I have mixed feelings about changing the name of the holiday because yes the Native Americans were in America before Columbus, but I also do not know if changing a set holiday is a good thing. I do not believe that people would be too mad because we live around many places that were once homes to natives. The state of Iowia even has towns named after Native Americans, like Cherokee and Sioux City.
