Self-Defense Ruined The Future For Basketball Star

Roland Griffin was dismissed from basketball till 2020 for punching his assistant coach (Ricky Johns) in face 5 times. Griffin said he punched Johns in self-defense after the coach grabbed him in the locker room. "We got in each other's face. It was really heated. He eventually grabbed me by the jacket and tried to throw me down on the ground physically. We were against the locker, wrestling against the locker. He was grabbing me and holding me. Said Griffin. It all began on monday after Johns told him to go to study hall and began yelling at him even though he wasn't supposed to have study hall that day. He was temporarily suspended Monday.  Wednesday, he was suspended from the school through May 31, 2020. He can't return to basketball when his suspension ends. John spent 8 hours in the hospital for a head injury. Iona basketball team has not taken any action against Johns. Griffin was Iona's third-leading scorer last season. He was going to help the team win it's fourth consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament.

Would you be mad if you got in trouble for punching someone in self-defense-

Yes, if I had a great basketball career ahead of me and I got in trouble for punching the coach in self-defense I would be very upset. I think that if the coach started the fight in the first place he should be the one getting in trouble.

Do you think it was right for him to punch the coach-

Yes, I think that because the coach was the one to start it and he was hurting him it is ok.I think that Griffin was just trying to protect himself.  I also think that there is always two sides to the story so the coach could tell it from the other point of view.

  • Well done Shelby! Be sure to stay away from yes/no questions. -3

  • I would be mad especially since the coach had no reason to start grabbing him in the first place. I think if he tried to get away non violently and it wasn't working then he was right to start being violent.

  • I think that it is the job of the coach to keep his cool and if he was trying to fight a player, it is mostly his fault.

    • I agree, I think that if any coach is trying to fight a player he should be the one getting in trouble. I don't think any coach needs to be rude to his/her players. I also think that Griffin shouldn't of punched him 5 times unless he really was hurting him.

  • Yes if I got in trouble for defending myself because i should just let the person attack me without doing anything

I think it was because if it was in self-defense and not just because he wanted to it would ok to defend yourself.

  • If it was truly self-defense, I would be furious if I got in trouble for defending myself. I think he should have tried to leave before any altercation happened, and I doubt it was necessary to punch him 5 times.

    • Yes, I think that if I was trying to defend myself with a bight future ahead of me I would be furious. I do agree that he shouldn't of punched him 5 times. I think that Griffin should have handed it in a better matter. I also think that the coach should have handled it in a better way.

  • Yes, if someone came at me and I defended myself then later got in trouble I would be really mad because I was just protecting myself. Yes I think he had the right to punch the coah but it was unnessasary to pinch him 5 times, he should have stopped after 2 hits.

  • I would be very upset that my coach would even try to hurt me like that in the first place, and on top of that losing my basketball career. Yes, I believe that if anyone, not just the coach, puts their hands on you and physically tries to harm you, you have the righ to self defense.

    • I agree, if my coach was trying to hurt me I would be very upset. No coach needs to do that unless it is self defence. I think that the coach should have handled it in a better way. I think people need to think more before they do things.
