Secret Ingredient "Ice Cream"

Creepy Crawly insects… can you imagine eating the same thing that crawls beneath your feet? A South African company is pushing to get their product, insect milk ice cream, into local ice cream shops.  They are trying their best to tempt consumers to eat their “bug ice cream” by putting the product in fancy packages, as well as using creative marketing. The creators say that the ice cream looks almost identical to regular ice cream, but is made with a top secret ingredient. EntoMilk, also known as fly larvae is the “milk” and main ingredient within the ice cream. The company also states that after a blind taste test, the testers preferred the larvae milk ice cream better than some of the traditional ice creams. I personally do not think I would try the ice cream, but click the link below to read more so that you can decide what you would do.

Questions:

1) What would make you want to try this new “ice cream”?

2) How do you think that the product would taste versus the traditional ice cream?

My Answers:

1) Honestly the only way I would try this ice cream would be if I didnt know that there was bugs in it, or if I was in a competition of some sort.

2) I'm thinking that it would just have kind of like a gritty texture, or less sweet of a taste. I definitely don't think it would taste as good as the normal ice cream I love.

  • Great job overall! You could have replied back a few more times(3 replies per page on average).

  • I would diffently not try this ice cream. I will still stick to my dairy ice cream.

  • I think I would try this, how many people can say that they have eaten larvae milk ice cream? When the blind taste testers had the icecream, they said that they preferred it over more traditional ice creams, so its not going to taste any different knowing that there are bugs in it. In fact, it tasted better acording to some of their testers. I don't know how differently it would taste compared to the traditional ice cream. I think It might have more of a sherbet-like taste, but I dont think it would be a bad different.

  • I would definitely not try this becuase it doesn't sound appitizing to me like regular ice cream would be to me. I would also want to know what is in my ice cream before I eat it too. I think that it might taste more sweet to certian people but it might also taste bitter too and that is what I think it would taste like to me. I personally don't like this idea of putting bug larva into ice cream.

  • Personally i would try this new bug ice cream as soon as i found it. Not sure how they make it but i do not like flys very much and if making ice cream out of them kills some of them thats a win in itself and the ice cream from them is just an extra.

I think it might taste a little different and feel a little different but it might be a good ice cream for a person who is doing a diet and wants some ice cream that is good and healthier. I dont see why it wouldnt be healthier than traditional ice cream cause its mainly made up of sugars and stuff like that.

    • Haha, I never thought of the flies being killed Jayden. I feel like it depends on who you ask when talking about killing the flies as a good thing. Although I think that they multiply so fast so it probably wouldn't bother me. On the other hand, I still do not feel like I would be very interested in trying the item. I do completely agree that it would be a healthier option for someone who may be on a diet or needs another option. So, with all of this being said, I completely agree with you.

  • I would definitely try the insect ice cream solely for the fact that it is different. It would be a great experience just because it is a new concept. I believe that the ice cream would taste better than regular ice cream, especially if it has different flavors and if the entomilk was thick.

  • Avery, I agree I don't think I'll ever consider trying the ice cream; after reading your summary. If the company is using "EntoMilk", then wouldn't that mean they are using maggots? If so, I think that will turn more people away. Another thing I'm wondering about is if the ice cream will be a good source of protein.

    • Jocelyn, that is a very good question. However, when researching Entomilk further, I find nothing about it specifically being maggots. I actually determined that it was a dairy alternative made from insects. Furthermore, the article I read goes to say that it is rich, creamy and full of nutrients. So, with this being said, I think we can infer that it is actually maggots because fly larvae are maggots, but nobody flat out says that it is. If this is the case, that is even more disgusting, and I probably would not try it.

  • I agree with you Avery, I don't think that I would try the ice cream with larve in it. However I wonder if the bug ice cream is a healthier option compared to traditional ice cream. Also I feel like the larve ice cream would have a different consistency then just regular ice cream.
