Scientists Find The World’s Deepest Fish

The newfound species, known as the Mariana snailfish, is officially considered the world’s deepest fish. he live at roughly 26,686 feet below sea level.

the Mariana snailfish is found primarily on the bottom of the trench.

Rather than being equipped with giant teeth or razor-sharp fins, adaptations one might expect from living in harsh, barren conditions, the Mariana snailfish is actually relatively small, transparent and has a smooth, scaleless body, resembling that of a tadpole.

At the bottom of the trench, the pressure can amount to over 15,000 pounds per square inch, roughly the equivalent of an elephant standing on your thumb. The fish’s compact, scaleless body is thought to help it survive under the immense pressure of living roughly five miles below sea level.

1. Do you think there are more marine creatures to discover in the ocean? Why?

2. How do you think that this small fish survives at such depth?

  • Good story and summary! You only commented once to student comments and that part is worth 20 points.

  • I definitely think that there are more undiscovered creatures that we don't know about, because nowadays, we are more and more things that we didn't know about before. I don't know for sure, but I do know that the fish has adaptations that would have to have to survive under that much pressure.

  • Yes i do because there is always more to be discovered in the ocean or anywhere for that matter. Why because we humans keep finding new things all the time. We find new cures we find new animals we find new ways to make things that will save the U.S money. This fish has no like flesh or skin so  i think thats why it can be that deep in the ocean.

  • I think so because there is so much of the ocean that is undiscovered, so there are probably thousands of different animals we haven't found. I think because it is so deep its body is very condense and it eats sediments and dead fish.

  • I do believe that there are many species that we do not have any idea about. Things are always coming about and continue to evolve throughout time. I think that it has evolved and found new ways to survive at such great depths. I think that it has found out things that other species may not know how to do.

  • I believe that with how long out civilization has lasted so far with still finding these new creature that there could easily be more sea creature under the sea that we don't know about or at least haven't discovered yet. The small size could help it survive with dealing with pressure that deep under water but beyond that I don't really know how it does it.

  • I know that there is more marine creatures in the world's oceans which we don't know about, I know this because I'm pretty sure I read a fact somewhere that like over 90$ of the ocean is still undiscovered. I think that the fish's body just adapted to being at such great depths over millions of years, because it doesn't look like a fish that you would just see anywhere in the world. It looks very old.

  • 1. I totally think that there are more creatures dwelling in the ocean, since we have so little of it explored. The topic of the ocean floor interests me some so I think it would be cool to hear of more discoveries like this one.

    2. Because of it's specialized body it can withstand the pressure, but I think it must have some tactic to get away from predators. I think it's unique body structure has some special feature that allows it to survive, possibly camouflage with its transparent body.

  • I think that there might be more marine creatures that live in the ocean because the ocean is huge and we haven't explored the ocean. Once we get the technology, more of the ocean will be discovered and more species will pop up. I think this small fish survives by using its adaptions for the pressure, and probably eating creatures or plants smaller than it.

  • the world is seventyfive percent water not even half of it has been fully explored by humans yet, there is no doubt in my mind that there are other undiscovered marine lifeforms. It probably has a sturdy exoskeleton that sustains the pressure needed to survive in the depths.
