School Uniforms

School uniforms have many pros and cons. Some pros are that they can increase student focus. Studies say that when students dont have something nice on, nothing to notice or comment on, they spend more of that energy on learning and focusing in class. They can "Promote safety" inside and outside of school. Studies also say that having school uniforms make them blend in and not having to worry about being a target for "gang-involved people". One more pro is they can break down class barriers between students. When students wear uniforms, it eliminates who looks rich and who looks poor. When students dont wear school uniforms it makes the most and least  economic privileged students easier to spot.

The cons of having school uniforms are they can be expensive for parents than actually clothing. Uniforms can also be hard to shop for and hard to find. Uniforms can decrease self-expression. Teenagers should be able to express their emotions, tastes in music, pericings, fashion, art, and hair. Schools are tough on kids, they take away their freedom to really express who they are. Another con of uniforms are that they can be sexist. Some schools require for girls to only wear dresses, skirts and no pants. Most students are still unaware of their gender so it makes it harder for them to express who they are.

I believe students should be able to express who they really are without a school uniform. At my old school we had to wear uniforms and the dress code was strict. Blue, white, or red button up shirts. Red, blue, white, black or brown belt with khaki pants. We couldn't zip up our jackets, and couldn't wear hoodies. Our shoes had to have backs on them, and we couldnt wear open toed shoes.

Do you think school uniforms should even be a thing? Why or why not?

    • I agree, I wouldn't want to wear a school uniform at all.

  • I don't think that school uniforms should be required by schools. I believe students should be able to wear what they want. It's their right to express themselves. Also some girls might not be ok with having to wear a skirt or dress everyday even in the winter time.

  • In my opinion school uniforms can be good...like they would make the school look more united and students wouldn't be able to judge other students for their choice of stlye. But on the other hand, students would lose the right to express themseslves with what they wear and most of the time for school uniforms boys have to wear pants while girls wear skirts and dresses and some students are not ok with that.

  • i dont think school uniforms should be a thing because i think kids should be able to express themselves in there own way.its just controlling over kids.

    • I agree, kids should be able to express themselves.

  • I think the only thing that should limit what a student wears is a dress code. And even at that it shouldnt be super strict. Wearing uniforms is something that shuts down a teenagers way of expressing themselves. Everyone looking the same, I feel, tells a student that everyone is the same and you arent unique. I think that uniforms for public schools should not be allowed. However private schools is not something I can speak on, therefore they can do what they want I guess.

    • I agree, public schools shouldnt have uniforms, but private schools are really a different story.

  • No, I think that they should get rid of school uniforms because there really is no point. In one of my old schools we had uniforms and it was so annoying to find the right shirt and skirt every year in the store for school. In my school girls could only wear skirts and dresses even if it was winter. People should be allowed to dress how they want. Dress code is really the only thing necessary to an extent.

  • No they should't because students should be able to wear what they want within reason. I think that dress codes should be in place of uniforms so students have some freedom in what they wear. ALso, some schools that have uniforms have very expensive uniforms making it harder for poorer people to get into these schools.

    • Yes, Students should be able to wear what they want.
