School Uniforms

Evidence claims that the first school uniform got introduced in 1212,in England. These students were required to wear a robe-like outfit called a ‘Cappa clausa’. Only 12% of US schools require uniforms. This data was collected through a survey conducted in the year 2020. Many students and parents find it beneficial to wear school uniforms. On the other hand, some people find it useless, and not worth the battle it could create. The reason that some people find it beneficial is they feel it creates better learning experiences. The National Association of Secondary School Principals states in a meeting that, “When all students are wearing the same outfit, they are less concerned about how they look and how they fit in with their peers; thus, they can concentrate on their schoolwork”(Chris). Wearing uniforms can also be a relief to parents/guardians. The child doesn’t have to worry about what to wear, what to buy, and what clothes are most popular. It is healthy for a student's brain to not have to stress about their next day's outfit is perfect. It also is nice for those who cannot afford name-brand clothing. Lastly, it creates an equal environment of everyone coming together as one and feeling equal. While many people find it beneficial to require uniforms, others find it unhelpful. This opinion claims that it is hard for students to express themselves through clothing when they are forced to wear the same things.

Although some people find it helps kids feel like one, the opposite argument believes that it is a bad idea to create such a conformed environment. It doesn’t allow the students to feel different and unique from everyone else. Another problem schools face when trying to require a uniform is the students who oppose the dress code. Usually, these students make it clear they don’t like the rule. They do this by going against the code and wearing anything but what is required. This causes problems within the school with staff, students, and families.

In the end, I don’t feel strongly about one side of the argument more than the other. I think I lean more towards non-uniform though. I think that every person and every student deserves the right to express themselves, and dress in their way. I think that students that are required to wear the same thing every day seem to get bland. It has no fun involved and only causes frustration. Although I don’t think they are necessary, I do understand where schools come from when requiring them. Especially for the less fortunate who are embarrassed by what they wear compared to others.

Do you think our school should require uniforms?

Why or why not?

Do you think it does any good?

  • I don't think that out school should require uniforms because kids should be able to express themselves through what they were. Even though kids may not be able to afford name brand clothes, they can still get nice looking clothes from a second-hand store. Even though people want to have kids dress similar and think alike, everyone needs to be able to express themselves.

  • I don't think that our school should require uniforms but I do agree with their dress code besides tank tops. I don't understand how tank tops are "revealing". I don't think uniforms do any good because like people say the dress code is only for the girls and so are the uniforms. They are just making sure boys don't get distracted.

  • I don't think our schools should require uniforms. I think students should be allowed to wear what they want, with some exceptions. Although I don't think they should require it, school uniforms would stop dress coding. School uniforms have a few pros but I don't think they should be required.

  • I don't think harlan should enforce uniforms. Being able to dress freely at school makes it feel less like a prison and more like an actual learning environment. We're told how to act and what to do everyday we go to school from the time we were 5. High school students have the freedom to wear what they want and if that's taken away, we won't be happy.

  • I don' think that our school should require uniforms because even though people would enjoy not having to worry about what to wear, people would be more upset about being told what to wear. I think it makes a lot of sense for some schools to require uniforms because it helps students to focus not on what everyone is wearing and more on their work and relationships with peers.

  • In my opinion there is nothing wrong with schools requiring school uniforms but if they want us to wear school uniforms, they have to provide us the uniforms, we should not pay for it.

  • I do think that schools should require uniforms. I think that maybe it would solve a lot of bullying issues. I think that it would do good and it would also stop some of the dress code issues that pop up in our school. I also think it would stop with everyone complaining about the dress code issues.

  • I think schools should not be required to use a uniform because I understand that form some people are helpful to use on, but when you don't like the uniform the school has it makes it worse. I feel that schools should better teach that it doesn't matter if you have clothes from a name-brand that doesn't make you a better person or a worst person.

  • I think that we should not have to be required to wear school uniforms because by wearing your own clothes you get to express yourself. With wearing school uniforms it would probably cause more trouble for the people who don't want to wear them. I think they would try to find ways around it. Having a slight dress code like not wearing skinny straps is fine because that way people can still wear what they want.

  • I don't think we should be required to wear uniforms in school. Some of the points are valid, but in the end, I think that uniforms would do the opposite of what they intend. No matter what we wear, we're not all going to feel the same or feel like we all fit in because you can't strip people of their differences by making them wear the same thing. Also, kids should be able to like the way they feel, and a huge part of that is in what they wear. I enjoy picking out outfits that make me feel more confident or happy with the way I look, and countless other people do as well. But yes, I do understand that some people can't afford the clothes they want or what other people have and that would definitely be an upside to wearing a uniform because that would be one less thing to worry about.
