The superintendent of a Texas school district resigned this weekend and is curently apologizing after he made racist comments about Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson. Onalaska Independent School District's own superintendent Lynn Redden formally resigned and sent his letter to the Board of Trustees which held a meeting to decide the punishments of his actions. He has apologized on his twitter and facebook platforms and his deep regrets about what he has said. First apology was directly to Deshaun Watson. He explained how deeply sorry he is for what he said and how sorry he is too his family, friends, and anyone who takes offense to his statement. The statement that started it all was, "That may have been the most inept quarterback decision I've seen in the NFL," he wrote on Facebook, according to Houston ABC station KTRK "When you need precision decision making you can't count on a black quarterback." -Lynn Redden. After the comment, Watson simply pushed it away and was the bigger person by not responding with more hatred. Watson told reporters. "I'm all about love, that's what I focus on." Watson's teammates and coaches weren't as calm and collected as he was, but still decided not to take anymore action on the remark. Redden knew what he had said was too big of a mistake to take back so he will take any penalty that he is given. Further discussion and meetings will follow up this week.

What penalty do you think Lynn Redden deserves for his online comment?

I think he definitely needs fired if he didn't resign. He can't stay at a school to set good examples when he isn't doing that himself. He also may need his social media platforms monitored.

Would you react to hate the same way Watson did?

Yes. I wouldn't want to fight fire with fire. It wouldn't get me anywhere but trouble and having my athletic career in jeoprody. I felt his reaction is something we all need to take notice on because he is a role model to some, and he showed us that reacting positively to it or not feeding into it at all is more beneficial than trying to fight the hate.

  • Great job Emily! Be sue to capitalize key words in title next time.

  • I think his resigning is a good idea because he is not a good example to the school children. I myself would get mad at first, but before I would psot anything I would calm down and decide the best way to take it on. Once something is on the internet it stays there and can't be taken down, someone can always find that and use it against you.

    • I agree Reanna. By setting such a bad example, he ruined the reputation of the school and the student body. I also would get mad and want to fight back at first, but then I would realize the consequences I would face wouldn't be worth the little remark I'd make back.

    • I agree with you. He shouldn't have his social media platforms still active after what he said. Like you said, I think it's good if you react the way Watson did. He truly did set a great example.

  • For saying this he should've got fired and he shouldn't be saying things like this. He's definetly not being a good example for the school or students and should be punished. I think I would react in same way.

    • I also agree with you. He shouldn't be let off easy for something this big. Like you said, he isn't being the best example for the kids and should be teaching them right and wrong. Also, acting like Watson did would be the best situation to sort out.

  • fired it should be put on his record and he should learn not to say stuff like that. no he should of just let it roll off his back and moved on because once people see that it dosent bother them they will stop

    • I agree with you. He should learn from his actions and not just give in. He needs to suffer the embarassment for what he did. Like you said, I agree that he should let it go.

  • I think that from my perspective, it's easy to say that I would react the same way Watson did - calm and collected. Watson had to be very strong and positive in order to react the way he did and I think that it says a lot about his character. Personally, I would try to stay calm and positive and not lash out.

    • I agree with you. I think it's important to keep calm and collected during these kind of situations. He truly set a good example of how we should act to online hate.
