School Considers 4-day School Week

The Peoria Unified School District are doing a thirty day study that will investigate the possibility of a four day school week. The district has lowered its budget by over $24 million in the last five years. Because of budget cuts, the school can no longer pay staff for working a five day week. In an emailed press release, Superintendent Denton Santarelli said, "A four day school week is one option we are reviewing as we continue to look at cost-saving measures which will allow us to maintain high levels of service to our students and families."

  • Good job but I do see that all of your replies were done on one day-Feb. 18. You should be commenting throughout the week.

  • A five day school week.  Less homework would be my reason.  I think a four day school week would result in more homework.  Less days in the classroom and the standards still need to be met.

  • Well having a 4 day school week would be nice with the longer weekends. Definitely think that having  more time on days off will increase the amount of homework.

  • I would like a 4-day school day just like every other kid I don't think that it would impact the amount of homework because you have to go the same amount of days.

  • I think anyone would really like a 4 day week. I dont think homework would be really any different but youd have to go to school longer to make that time up. But even if you do get more homework you have that extra day to get it done.

  • I would definitely prefer a four day school week. We go to school for five days and then we are expected to school work in the evenings and on our two day break during the weekend, it just doesn't make sense. Having an extra day of break would allow students and teachers to have a break and I think that it would encourage them to work harder.

    • I think that there are good things about both a five day week and a four day week. However, your points make me lean towards the four day school week.

  • I would prefer a four day week end because sometimes I get board at home, so I wouldn't want a five day week end. I feel like we would have more homework if we a shorter week.

  • I would prefer the four day week just because it would not only give us more time to do our own things, but we would also have more time to do homework. Although if we did the four day week I think that we would have a ton more homework with having only four day week and longer weekends then we would have more time to work on it so we'd have harder and longer projects.

  • I don't really have a huge opinion on the subject, to be absolutely honest. I mean, we have short weeks quite often, much like this week, so I don't think it would really make a huge difference for HCHS. As for this school, it would really cut out a lot of money that they spend during one day! As for homework, I don't think that it would make too much of a difference.
