Ruth Bader Ginsburg, one of our nine supreme court justices, was asked about democracy and how this period in time would be described as, where she said that this time in history would be described as "an abberation," or in simpler terms, a bad change from the usual. She thinks most people in the future will note this area of time as so, but she feels that, "over the long haul," it will get better. She also mentioned how "The pendulum goes too far to the right, it's going to swing back," meaning that she thinks Republicans are winning out at the moment, but Democrats will rise in power soon. She says that she wants to see this happen while she is alive, and she also states that she is hopeful for democracy. Ginsburg is also upset about the fact that the supreme court "doesn't have an agenda." But in the end, Ruth thinks that everything will end up well over time.

1 - Ginsburg was prompted an interesting question, so, how would you describe this time period in your own words?

I'd probably describe this as a time of reforming. The thing I see the most in this time period is humans reaching a real good point. Right now, racism, discrimination, and all that is too big, but it is definitely dying out. I find that the world is truly becoming self aware and it knows what it wants, and I think this is a time period of big change, I feel as if it will contain some of the biggest events in human history.

2 - How does your opinion compare to Ginsburg's?

Mine is a bit more hopeful for the current time period, but hers is a bit more on the political side. We are similar though because we have high hopes for how it will all end up.

  • I think this is a great topic and you did a great job. I'm guessing many people skipped it because it requires some deep thought, which is sad.

  • I don't really know what I would describe this time as, because we have things like climate change that some people deny is happening, and we also have an opioid epidemic that isn't really getting better. Then you look at the brighter side that racism and discrimination are obviously way better then they used to be, and there have been so many advancements in the medical field.  This is a bit of a harder question to answer, because there are so many things going on in the world right now, for better, and for worse.

    • I can definitely understand your standpoint! The world is quite a mixed bag, things are getting better while also some other things are getting worse. Things like trans rights and acceptance of others are becoming common place, while in places like Hong Kong a deadly revolution is happening and we aren't sure who will win out.
