Russian Skater's Career Over

On Thursday, Evgeni Plushenko dropped out of the men's short program at the Olympics in Sochi. He was set to be one of the top contenders, and even had a great chance at the gold medal. During the warmup right before the competition, the skater experienced severe spinal pain. A year before the Olympics, he had back surgery done. The fans in the arena were completely disappointed in the skater, but he couldn't help it. Plushenko retired after dropping out of the Olympics. Other Russian figure skaters are not happy about the situation. One other skater that Plushenko beat out in a regional responded that he would have had a chance, and is very frustrated about no one from the home country competing in an event that they had planned to medal in. I think it is very sad that the world-renown skater had to drop out due to back pain. When he had a great chance to get a medal, going to not competing ever again would be very devastating.

What do you guys think about it? How would you respond to not being able to compete because of an injury when you are so close to earning a medal?

  • Great job Laura!!

  • I would be very frustrated with myself knowing that I was so close to being able to get a medal.

  • It would be a terrible feeling to have to give up everything you've worked so hard for just for back pains.

    • I couldn't imagine how challenging it would be to decide whether to compete or not.

  • I think it was better to drop out than keep going. I f he hadn't of dropped out he could have experienced worse back pain than before. I would know that there is always another chance to win a medal.

    • The skater ended up retiring though, so his career and chance at a medal are over.

  • Injuries happen and you just have to deal with it I guess it really sucks

  • I don't think should be mad at him. He had a injury and it wasn't his fault. I feel bad for the man because he was so close. I think he should have not competed because he could have gotten even worse injured.

    • I agree that he made a good decision.

  • I'm really glad that he dropped out because he is from Russia and they are a rival in the Olympics. It would be bad if it was life threatening but it's not so I'm glad it happened.
