Who knew that something great could come from a tragedy? This story starts in May of 2011 when Dindim, a Magellanic penguin, was caught in an oil spill. Barely able to move, Dindim was found on Proveta Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil by a man who lives nearby. The man, Joao Pereira de Souza, cared for the penguin, washed him off, fed him, and eventually released him.
However, soon after the penguin was released, he returned to Pereira de Souza. Dindim then stayed with him for a few months, the two growing closer each day. The penguin left on his own in February, but then returned in June. This schedule of Dindim leaving in February and returning in June has happened every year since.
Below, you will see Pereira de Souza holding a happy Dindim

- Why do you think Dindim continues to return to his caretaker?
- What do you think this shows about animals?
- What would you do in this situation if you were Pereira de Souza?
I think that Dindim continues to return to Pereira de Souza because he knows that he will be well cared for. I also think that the penguin has made an emotional relationship with his caretaker, and will always return because of this. I think that this validates the fact that animals do have feelings, and that animals are extremely intelligent. If I were Pereira de Souza, I would've done the same thing! I love animals and I definitely would've taken care of an animal in need.

Great job!
I agree. I think he keeps returning to be taken care of. I also think this does show their intelligence and animals emotional attachment to people who take care of them. If I were the man I would definitely help take care of them because I think it would be super cool to take care of a penguin..
I think he keeps returning because his caretaker took care of the penguin. I think it shows that they care about their owners. I would be surprised because I never really thought animals really paid that much attention.
Well after awhile this has now become a habit for the penguin. Since this mean treats him so well and they are starting to get close is probably why he comes back. But like Lexie said it does show how smart animals really are.
I think he keeps returning cause he trusts the caretaker and created a big connection between the two when he helped him get out of a problem. Animals remember who helped them and the penguin probably loves him. If i was in the same situation I would do the same! I love animals and i would do anything to help them
He probably remembers how vital his caretaker was to his survival. I think animals brains can be related to humans in memory and stuff like that. I would be pretty happy if a penguin would continue to come back.
I think it is sort of habit for Dindim! Pereira de Souza does treat him very well, and I think that Dindim wants to continue going back either to "repay" Pereira de Souza for taking care of him, or to continue to get the care that he wants! Animals are very smart, smarter than we think they are!
I think that the penguin realizes what he did for him and wants to keep seeing him. I think animals know who people are and what they do for them. I would love it knowing that the penguin would come back year after year basically just to see this person. I would want to take care of the animal as long as they kept coming back to see me.
I agree with you! I think that Dindim is sort of repaying his caretaker for what he did. However, I also think that Dindim continues to return because of the bond that they made. It would be so cool to have a penguin return to your house and want to see you!
