Le’Ron McClain , a retired NFL fullback, has been battling brain-related injuries and asking the NFL for their help. McClain retired from the league in 2014, and he said on social media that his brain has had problems since then. The NFL has does nothing to help him, but he believes if he was a quarterback that the NFL would end up helping him. Most of his social media followers asked if he needed help from anything to suicide prevention to money to help pay for his medical and lawyer bills. He replied that he is not doing well but he will keep on fighting. The dozens of tweets coming from McClain came out hours after Colts Quarterback Andrew Luck retired due to health issues, saying that he was stuck in a cycle of “injury, pain, rehab.” All in all, McClain has to keep struggling to fight brain injuries and needs help from the NFL. Do you believe that the NFL should help every former NFL player with brain related injuries due to football?

I believe that the NFL should always consider assiting every former player with injuries, especially the brain. Because if he never played football they wouldn't have to struggle fighting for help.

What do you think the NFL can do to help slow down the amount of head injuries?

I think that there will have to be tons of research done to see what the problem is and how to slow it down but I think it will be really diffucult to see how to slow it down because they have added new helmets that help prevent concussions but I believe there is more technology out there to help slow down brain injuries by blows to the head.

  • Well done Brody!

  • I think that the NFL needs to do studies on the impact on the brain due to direct contact with another player. This can lead to finding better support from the helmet, and can decrease the ammount of injuries.

  • I agree and dissagre becuase if the head injuries were casued while he was playing he would have to prove the facts, and probably have to take the NFL to court in a civil case. However I dissagere becuase of the income that he made while in the league should be able to pay for his expences in his head injuries. Also looking online some players recieve money monthly after retirement, and insurance benifits so this may help him pay for healthcare costs.

    • I think that no player should have to struggle with depression and suicidal thoughts no matter on how much his income, and you never know if he was a fullback he may not have gotten a better salary then most top notch players. But I think that it would look good for the NFL.

  • No I do not think that the NFL should help pay for the former players injuries, because when you join football you know there is a high chance that you can get brain injuries. If they dont want to get the injuries I feel like they should not play in the beginning. I feel like the NFL sould try and put more money into researching better ways to make pads and helmets safer for the players so they don't get hurt as much as they do.

    • I ageree with jameson, you enter the NFL at your own risk. You know u are going to get hurt at some point and in football there are a lot of head injerys. So i dont think NFL players should have to py for other players injerys. i think they should put money into studying helmets and making better helmts to reduce brain injerys. I think that no player should have to deal with depression, but there is lot of players out there that would not want to pay for other players. so i dont think they should have to pay for former players.

    • I understand what you are getting at, but the players are what makes the NFL a succesful business so I think the league should return the favor and help them with some type of insdurance. Increasing the techonology of football equipment.

  • To some extent, I beleive the NFL should try to help out anyone that they can with any injuries sustained while playing for them. However, I don't know what kinds of contracts and or wavers that the players sign before hand. If they sign a waver or contract that says the NFL doesn't have to help them with any sustained injuries, then they can't expect the NFL to do anything more than that.  I think the NFL can come up with the latest and best concussion-preventing technology for their helmets, and possibly make it regulation that they stay up to date every year on their helmets. They can also do this with their shoulder pads, cleets, and pads in their pants, trying to prevent more injuries from happening.

  • I strongly believe that the NFL should help everyone out that has, or is struggling with any sort of brain damage due to playing football in their league. Especially because if he would have never decided to play football in the NFL, then this wouldnt be an issue for him. I also think that the NFL needs to help him because he has reached out to them about helping him, and not doing anything about it makes them look bad.

Personally, I believe that there have been many researchers trying to figure out how to make football a safer sport. But, if the head injury rate tends to keep rising and rising, then they could possibly start thinking about more padding in the helmet. Or if they have already tried that then they could try changing some of the rules in football so there would be less contact to the head.

    • I agree that researchers should continue to work on improving the equipment and making football a safer sport, but when a player signs I think there is an understood risk that they could end up with some sort of brain damage in the long run.
