The number of wolves in Washington State in increasing. Acourding to a University of Washington reseacher, he has found that the wolf population in Washington is much higher than estimated. This researcher has spent a couple of years studying the animals. He used dogs to detect these wolves. Samuel Wasser, the reseacher, said that his dogs detected 95 wolves in just one area. Which is better than the wolf count last wear which was only a minimum of 122 wolves. State managers addressed the Washington pannel stating that the average wolf growth has increased by 30 percent on average, per year. This may not seem like a huge growth rate to humans like us, but it is a big increase on a smaller population like the wolves. Since this increse there has been less conflicts, but the big question is how many wolves are raoming around the state. This is important because it is the determining factor of weather these wolves need to be protected under state or federal law. If the wolf poplutation remains at a low count, then I believe that they would need to be put under state law and be protected. If the wolves grow in number I don't think that they will need to be put under law.

1. Why do you think that the wolf population decreased in the fisrt place?

I believe that many things could have been the cause of the decreasing wolf population. Ranchers  play a big part in the populations. They tend to track and kill animals for getting into their crops.

2. With the increase in wolf population, will they need to be under state protection?

If the wolves keep on increaseing the way that the researcher is saying, I don't think that they will need to be protected. If the wolf population is not at the standard population, then I think that they might need to be under state law until they grow into a larger population.

  • Well done Tyann!

  • I beleieve there eather getting hunted by humans or other wild animals and are producing enough to keep the population high and probelly farmers and ranchers killing cuase there eatinf the crops or tearing them up

They might have to so hunters or what ever keeps killing them so the population doesn’t keep going down

  • There could are could be many factors in why the wolf population declined such as weather, climate, and predators. I think there will need to be laws in place to make sure the wolf population does is not harmed.

  • I agree. I think there could be many factors playing into why the wolf population decreased in the first place. If the wolves have enough of each other, I do not think that they need to be under state protection.

  • I think the wolf population decreased in the first place because of poachers or probably farmers. I think that if the wolves keep increasing than they won't need to be protected, but if the number rapidly decreases than they will probably be protected.

    • I agree with you Cass. I also believe that the wolf population decreased because of farmers and ranchers. They were killing wolves because they were getting into ranchers and farmers livestock. I also agree with with your statement about the increasing population, but I also agree with your statement about the decreasing population.

  • I think that the populaltion is going down because people keep killing the wolfs. I am guessing that they will need to be under the state protection so that the wolfs will stop being killed and protected until the population will go up agian.

    • I agree with you. I also believe that the population is going down because people keep hunting and killing them, so they stay out of ranchers livestock. They might need to be under protecting for a little bit of time, but not for long because of their increasing population.

  • I think that it decreased because of farmers, ranchers, and hunters. The farmers track and kill these animals to keep them away from their herd so that they can make sure to profit each year. I don't think that they need to be under state protection because if they are the population will continue to increase and the balance of prey and predator will be out of hand and many farmers could have more problems with them.

  • I think the wolf population decreased becuase ranchers take a big role in this as they tend to kill animals as they get into there crops. May also not have enough prey. It's to bad they are decreasing and hopefully come more soon. I don't think it'll need to be under state protection.
