Rafael Nadal, also known as the "King of the Clay," took home his fourth US Open championship this weekend in Queens, New York, earning his 19th Grand Slam title. His opponent, Daniil Medvedev, did not go easy on him. Nadal was initially leading by two sets, but Medvedev was able to rally back and tie it at 2-2. Nadal was only up 5-4 by the last game of the fifth and final set before putting it away and securing the win 3-2. With this being Nadal's 19th Grand Slam title, he is now only one behind Roger Federer's record of 20. Nadal has said that he would like to end his career first in the Grand Slam standings, but that his happiness will not be determined on whether or not that goal is reached.

Why do you think the match was so close?
Medvedev is ten years younger than Nadal, but Nadal's experience combined with his overall skill were able to get the win.
Do you think Nadal will reach his goal of surpassing Federer and being first in the Grand Slam standings? If so, why?
Yes, because Nadal is several years younger than Federer, which will likely give him more time to surpass him in the standings.

Well done Nolan. I do think your first question could be stronger. It assumes everyone watched the match which I'm guessing few did.
I think the match was close because although Nadal has 10 years of experience more than Medvedev, Medvedev was probably more athleticly gifted at the time than Nadal because he is younger. I don't think he will reach his goal because if the series was close your just giving Medvedev more time to prepare and get better. While Nadal will get older and slower.
I'm not sure if I agree, I wouldn't say that Medvedev is necesarrily more athletically gifted because he is younger than Nadal, simply due to the fact that Nadal has much more experience. I disagree with thinking Nadal will not reach first in Grand Slam standings, I think Nadal will reach first before his career is over.
I think the match was so close because they are both very good however, Nadal had more experince which probably helped contribute to his win. I think he will reach his goal because he's very determind and vey talented too.
I would have to agree with you, like I said in previous comments, Nadal and Medvedev are both great athletes, but Nadal's experience allowed him to come away with the win. You are right when you say Nadal is determined and talented, he would not be able to be second in Grand Slam standings if he wasn't.
I think it was close because they are both really good players and I think that Nadal got a little cocky after leading 2-0 and it took him awhile to get his head on straight. Yes I think it is possible and he has a great chanse at doing it he just needs to keep trying.
I agree that it was so close because of the amount of skill both players have, but I would have to disagree about Nadal getting cocky. I think Medvedev was simply able to get an advantage over Nadal, but Nadal was able to stop him before Medvedev could come away from the tournament in 1st place. I also think you are right when you say that Nadal has a great chance of beating Federer's record if he keeps trying and working at it.
1.) I also agree that Nadal had way more experience. I believe that Medvedev is a good player, but Nadal was better. I think if these two played again, it would be a really close match. I just believe that Nadal had more experience and that is how he won the match.
2. I believe that he will. There is close to a 5 year age difference between them. I think with this age gap, Nadal will be able to achieve the goal. I think that Nadal also has the midset to do this. He just won the US open and I don't think he is stopping anytime soon.
I think Nadal and Medvedev are both great tennis players, but as I said, I believe Nadal's overall experience compared to Medvedev's is what won the game. It would definitely be interesting to see them play again. Just like in high school tennis, you can set a goal and achieve it if you have the right mindset, and I think Nadal will do the same.
I think that in the begining of the match Nadal, had all of the momentum and towards the end Medvedev got the momentum and tied the game up but Nadal got it back and finished the game. No because their is still Federer and Djokvice in the tennis world and their is a lot of good young players coming up.
