Public Scooters Causing Chaos in Cities All Around America

Have you ever visited an urban area and notice multiple public scooters lying around causing congestion? If you have, you’re not alone. Many cities around the United States have been seeing this problem more and more ever since the public scooter trend began a few years back. These scooters are used to allow pedestrians faster public transportation around urban areas. Some popular public scooter companies include Bird, Lime, and Lyft. Recently, cities have started to have trouble with these scooters causing both clutter and safety issues on the sidewalks. The city Indianapolis claims they have found scooters in fountains, canals, and thrown all over the streets. Even if these scooters are efficient means of transportation, is it really worth the safety, clutter, and destruction issues?

Questions:

1. How do you think cities can regulate scooters so these issues don't continue?

My answer: I think the best way to combat scooters being left in streets would be to force customers to rent and return the scooters to specific stations strung all around the city. In terms of the scooters being safety hazards on the sidewalk, I think the scooters should be ridden in the bike lane away from all walking civilians.

2. Have you ever used public scooters? If so, what do you think of them. If not, would you ever give them a try?

My answer: I did briefly used a public scooter when I was in Los Angeles. I thought that it was a cool idea, but I did notice how they were just thrown in random places on the street and sidewalk.

  • Great job Trey!

  • Scooters are fun to use. Just because of the actions of the few, the majortiy have to get punished. This is very unfair to all of those that really enjoy the scooters. The scooters should have bulit in cameras so that way it can see who had commited the crime.

  • I think that if the cities want to keep the scooters in good shape and the customers safe then they should make it so that when you rent it you must return it to a specific station so that it is always returned to a safe area. I have tried a scooter once and I thought it was fun and a cool way to get around.

    • I think that this is a good idea that will prevent damage to the scooters. There would also have to be a lot of stations set up around the city so the users don't have to look forever to return the scooter. I also think that they are very fun.

    • I think that is a great idea that will maybe help encourage users to return the scooters correctly. There would probably have to be a lot of those stations set up around the city for convinence. They are a lot of fun. If you have the chance, I suggest you give one a try.

  • These cities can definitely regulate the scooters by having the people on the scooters drive them in the bike lane instead of on the sidewalk. I have never been on a public scooter but if I saw one I probably would ride it because it seems like an easy way of transportation.

    • I think that it the best way to make these scooters safer for the people who are riding them. If you ever get a chance, I believe you should give them a try. I think they are a cool idea that just needs some regulating.

  • I agree with you that there should be specific places around the city where scooters can be rented from, so they are not just scattered around everywhere. The scooters have GPSs in them, so the rental companies could charge a fee if the scooters are not returned to the proper place or are left on the sidewalk. I was on Santa Monica Pier with you when you rode one, and they also had them when I went to Indinapolis last October. In the long run, it would probably be cheaper to just buy a bicycle or scooter.

    • The companies could also track down the indivdual who rented the scooter. This would be helpfull if the scooter was damaged or you know, thrown in a canal. I agree with you that it would be cheaper to just get a bike or a personal scooter.

  • I agree with you that the people using them should be forced to return the scooters to specific stations, there would probably need to be a lot of them around the city to make it a little easier for people to return them. I have not used a public scooter, but I would like to try them at some point because they look like a lot of fun and a really cool idea for people to travel around the city.
