Almost 209 years ago Capitol Hill was taken over by the British. Now on JANUARY 6, 2021 our own Americans have infiltrated the Capitol, in-sighting violence, looting, and trying to stop the recount of ballots in swing states.

Taking out the consideration of the group of violent protesters that stormed Capitol Hill. The rest of the country is outraged at how this situation has been handled.

Now seeing how the authorities handled the infiltration of capitol hill, versus how they handled the peaceful protest in the Black Lives Matter Movement.

Going all the way back to MLK Jr., Rosa Parks and so many other activists that have tried to end racism, and police brutality against colored people.

If we look at this graph, you can see that from 2015 to 2020 the highest rate of fatal police shootings by ethnicity is the blacks.

If you didn't know, in 1619 the Jamestown captives have been seen as the beginning of slavery in America.

Since the colonies, we have all ignored the fact that all people are human, no matter, race, height, age, etc...

Finally, I think as a country we have seen how today racism is very much alive and how the equality of the people is not how it seemed.

In my opinion, these pro-trump supporters that stormed the Capitol were treated very differently by authorities than the protesters that were at the capitol during the BLM protest.

The storming of the capitol has now been considered a very well planned attack and the capitol was not prepared.

I believe some authorities actually helped the protesters get into the capitol.

This is absolutely unacceptable, the lack of dignity people have is revolting.

Macing, Rubber Bullets, Tear gas, and even deadly force was used in the Black Lives Matter Protest.

What started out peaceful protests against police brutality and the murder of George Floyde, turned into police trying to disperse groups of those protesters and just pissing us off. Using mace, rubber bullets and tear gas, to disperse crowds of people trying to mourn, and inform the country of the pain they are going through.

Lets turn the page to the protesters storming the capitol. Pushing through barricades, fighting with police. The lack of force that was used is unacceptable. The BLM peaceful protesters who did not incite violence and were not on ground of a federal building got more force used against them just because of their race.

At the Capitol the violent protesters broke windows, looted and had congress men and women cowering under their seats for safety. Yet they walked out of the Capitol alive and without cuffs on.

The arrests from the BLM movement....14,000+

The arrests from the Capitol Hill Takeover....13

The deaths from the BLM movement....19+

The deaths from the Capitol Hill Takeover....5

What is your opinion on the authorities reaction to the violent protesters?

In your opinion do you think that the Capitol Hill Takeover is comparable to BLM?Why or why not?

Do you believe this country needs to reform? why or why not?

  • Good job Lilly! While you didn't get many comments, which surprises me as I think it's a good topic choice, I can tell you put good effort into you summary. Well done!

  • I do believe that white people and black people are treated different by the law almost everywhere, in the USA and in european coutries too. It's true that there has been some violence during the BLM protests but I believe that you cannot judge a movement only by watching what a small part of the people there do, in every peaceful protest thare are always some people that are just trying to take advantage of the situation to express their rage and frustration. I'm from Italy and some months ago in my city we had some peaceful protests for the lockdown that turned into violent ones with discriminatory messages because of fascists that used the event for their own interests.

  • I think that the BLM protests and these recent events are pretty different. BLM protests were to protest against police brutality in this country because too many people, especially black people, are dying at the hands of the police. However, I do not condone the violence that happened during these protests either. We saw many things happen in result to these protests, and if they even stayed peacfully past the curfue they would get teargassed and beat. The events at the capitol were way different. These people were able to break into a federal building, and little precautions were took to prepeare for these protests. These people did this because of lies of voter fraud fueled by the president, in comparison to BLM protesting against racism and police brutality. Also many people focused on the violence in the BLM movement and completely ignore the 100's of black people who's lives have been unjustly taken by police. It's sad.

    • I do agree. They are different, but when you look at the facts they are tremendously different situations but when you go to the things that are the same like police and government control over the situations, colored and white people are treated differently and in different situations and it is sad that after every abolitionist and every person that fought for equality of the people that in 2020-2021 our country is still separated.
