Pros & Cons Of Teachers Carrying Guns In School

Do you think teachers should be able to carry guns in school? Over the years the number of school shootings has majorly increased. The only thing that’s been able to protect schools is the police, and they cannot always get there in time. In America, 33 states allow teachers to carry guns. But, most people are not comfortable with schools carrying guns.

First off, if teachers were given guns in school, it would give them a chance to fight back. It could reduce the amount of deaths and injuries caused by school shootings. Rather than having to wait for the police, the teachers could react immediately and protect themselves, along with the students. Once other people find out schools carry guns, it could limit the amount of shootings, knowing that there are armed teachers in the building.

Giving guns to teachers puts them and the students in possible danger. That includes the teachers shooting themselves or the kids in the classroom. This could be done by accident, or even on purpose, depending on the situation. Even after all the training needed to allow teachers to carry guns, research shows that teachers would not achieve the same accuracy with every shot and would likely hit something or someone other than the target/shooter. Students could also gain access to the guns of the teachers who didn’t hide them well enough or mishandled them.

I can see both sides of this topic. Carrying guns can be dangerous but can be used in the right situation, depending on the circumstance.

Do you think teachers should be allowed to carry guns?

Would you feel safe if you knew your teacher carried a gun?

  • I have mixed feelings about teachers carrying guns at school. I think that it could be risky especially not knowing if the teacher can be trusted with the gun. On the other hand, it would be good for teachers to carry guns to protect students when it is necessary. If teachers carry guns, then they should have to take safety courses.

  • Yes, and no. I'm not sure how I feel about teachers being able to carry guns. If the teacher is trustworthy, has a clean record, and goes through a safety and learning course every year. I don't know if I would feel safe if my teacher had a gun. Of course, if there was a threat in the school and my teacher knew how to use a gun, id feel safe.

  • I think that teachers should be allowed to carry guns if they want. I would definetly feel safer during a lockdown if I knew that my teacher had a gun. I think that the teacher should keep the gun away and out of sight of the kids to keep them safe.

    • I agree, it would make people feel safer during lockdowns.

  • I think that if the teacher has gone through the proper process they should be able to carry a gun in school. In reality, a teacher carrying a gun would do more help than harm. But I don't think the kids should know that teachers have the guns. And if they do, the gun should be in a safe that kids can't get access to.

    • I agree, teachers should only be able to carry guns if they have gone through a certain process to carry one.

  • I believe that teachers that have a permit to carry, and have no worries about them causing harm. As well as not having depression or any problems that could cause them to become angry and shoot at the students.

  • I think if teachers should be allowed to carry guns, they would need to take atleast a firearm safety course, firearm operating course, firearm training course, or any other necessary courses to insure that the teacher doesn't hit anyone or anything other then the intended target.
