Sara Whitey was pushing her baby, Van, on a sidewalk when they were knocked over by a gigantic wave and swept up in the water. Slater then jumped in, grabbed the stroller, and helped retrieve Whitey. Chris Whitey is the child's father and described the frightening thirty seconds he couldn't see his wife or son, and thanked Slater on his Instagram.
"It was like a tsunami, the only thing I was thinking of was, I don't want my son to drown, I don't want my son to drown. I just wanted to keep him up, so I just held onto that pram as long as I could, there was a point where I got bumped and I let go, and that's when I thought, that's it." - Saraha Whitey.

I think it's an awesome story, and amazing that Kelly Slater risked his own life to save a mother and child's that he didn't even know. I don't know if I would have been brave enough to do that, I probably would've called a lifeguard or someone else for help. Being an experienced surfer, he has much more experience with waves like that. I think if Sara knew there were big waves like that, she probably should've stayed as far away from the beach as she could and not be pushing a stroller so close.
Questions:
What would you have done if you would have seen the mother and child drowning?
What do you think Sara Whitey should have done to prevent this happening in the first place?

Well done!!
I probably would have tried to get them out as quickly as possible and if not, I would have tried to get help.
I think that she could have been more aware of her surroundings and just watch what was happening around her. She couldve also walked somewhere where she wasn't as close to the water so there would be a less likely chance of her getting swept up by a giant wave.
I think this is a great story! If I saw the mother and child drowning, I would try and help them in any possible way that I could, and would also try and call for help. To possibly prevent this I think Sara could've picked a different place to walk, but knowing that she wasn't aware of those dangers she isn't exactly at fault and can't be blamed for dangers she wasn't expecting.
I think it's great that someone would be willing to sacrifice their life like that for someone that they don't even know. Sometimes it feels like people only care about their own safety, but this story proves that there are still people out there that truly care about the safety of others as well.
If I would have saw the mother and child drowning I would definitely try to help them out in anyway I could and if I couldn't or I was to scared I would go get a lifeguard or call 911 or something. I don't think this was the mom's fault at all but she probably could have walked farther away from the water or pay more attention to her surroundings.
If I was in Slater's position, of course I would try to help to the best of my ability. I think Whitey could have prevented this from happening by being more aware of her surroundings. If she had been more aware of the dangers she could have taken herself out of this situation.
I think that this story is awesome. If I was good at swimming I would do this but I 'm not the best swimmer. I think that she should have walked farther away from the waves to prevent this from happening.
I don't think I'm good enough of a swimmer to save them either!
This is a very cool story. I don't know if I would have had the reaction to instantly jump in and save them, but I am glad there are people out there that are. I would have tried to search for help and tried to find a professional.
I agree, I definitely wouldn't have been the one to jump in and save them but I would have tried to help by getting other people!
