Many people, especially republicans, are upset that Obama wants to talk directly to school students on Tuesday, September 8. They think it is an indoctrination speech designed to brainwash kids into being socialists. Our own school has an official statement regarding this speech: The district position on the advertised President Obama speech on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009, is that we will not alter classrooms regularly scheduled curriculum to watch the televised speech in grades K-8. Also, our understanding is that it will be presented to students that they should sign some sort of pledge at the conclusion of the speech. We are sure this will be a relatively harmless document, but HCSD will not participate in any orchestrated individual or group effort to get students to write or sign some type of "pledge" without parent and/or school review. At the 9-12 level class time will not be taken up in watching the speech unless it coincides with part of the regularly scheduled curriculum. Our recommendation to parents would be that should the like to have their child watch the speech it could provide a valuable "teaching moment" to record the speech at home, watch it as a family and use the occasion to discuss the political process. • im fine with watching it, but why do we have to sign a pledge? how would they know if we watched it without signing a pledge?
    • No has to sign any pledge, even if they watch the sppec.
  • I think that watching the speech would be ok, but I am not going to sign some stupid pledge. I dont need a piece of paper to say that I am going to stay in school.
  • I really see nothing wrong with the speech but I don't like the pledge.
  • I dont think there is anything wrong with this speech. All I think he is doing is trying to motivate kids to do well cause they are our future.
  • Im good with us watchign the speech but I refuse to sign some pledge so I can watch a speech what am I supposed to do if I dont agree with it im not going against my beliefs to watch a speech from a president I don't even like.
    • I agree that it would be okay to show the speech, but I think Obama is crazy if he wants kids to sign a pledge without their parents being at the school. I think that this could make Obama's popularity go down in his presidency.
  • why. why. I get done doing my free choice blog about this. then you just shoot me in the face with this discussion on it. arrgh
    • I had to say that, as it was true. In my opinion, I think it should be viewed by all schools, as the only legit objection to it is that it is being funded by tax payer's money. Others are just republicans who don't want their kids to hear anything ever said by Obama haha.
      • This discussion went up on Friday. I beat you to the punch. But, as long as no one else in your class already did this topic, you will be fine.
