Possibility of First Road in a Wildlife Refuge

Alaska's Interior secretary is pushing a plan that would allow for a new road to be built through Izembek. The 429 square miles of Izembek is home to brown bears, caribou, wolves, and once a year the world population of black brant geese. They say the road is to be used by the people of King Cove for transportation to the hospital during medical emergencies. Many say that the road would be a disaster because Izembek would set an example for construction in wilderness areas nationwide. The point has been brought up that there has been millions of dollars already spent on alternate means of transportation. Many have raised speculation that it's not for medical purposes, but for a Japaneses-owned fish cannery because they have pushed this in previous years.

Do you think there is a possibility of the fish cannery being behind this?

Should the road be built through Izembek? Why/why not?

I think there is a large chance that the fish cannery is behind this. They have pushed this for the past few years because they need better transportation for their products. I don't think the road should be built through Izembek because there are multiple laws about construction in a wildlife refuge, plus it would disturb the animals and put them in danger.

  • I think there is because if you want something you have to fight fir it and the fish cannery has been fighting for it for a while. I'm not sure if it's for medical reasons then it could go well but if it's for only destroying more animals environments then I think they shouldn't because the world is already going bad so why make it worse?

  • Yes because there is always a spill or mess up that could be big and affect animals. It should not because more risk of animals being harm so is the person driving because Alaska is known to be snowing and ice and the car could slid or when they hit a animal the animal and you could be harmed.

  • Yes, I think it is possible for the fish cannery to be behind this, especially since what happened is what they wanted. No, I don't think the road should be built through Izembek. It's a wildlife refuge so I road shouldn't be built through there.

  • I think that there is a possibility that the fish business is behind this because as long as you have enough money then you usually get what you want. I think the road should be built as long as it is only used for medical emergencies.

  • 1. Its possible but there is really no way of knowing.

    2. I think it is a very good idea and smart for the environment.

  • Yes they might be involved in some type of way. No it should not be built because if some of the animals are endangered in there is could ruin their habitat and then they could become extinct. If it was protect in the first place then whats makes them think they have the rights to destroy it.

  • I believe that the Fish Cannery is most likely involved in some type of way. I think that they should build the road if it is for good causes like medical purposes and getting people help faster but then again if they're doing it just because they can then I think that they are making a mistake by doing that.

  • i think that the cannery might be involved with this in some way but behind the whole thing i tink is rather unlikely. i think it should if they say its for hwat they claim for the use of medical purposes to get people to the hospitals faster.

  • I believe that the Fish Cannery is behind this, because what else would be better for them then to e able to move products faster and easier.I don't think they should, to could potentially cause danger to the animals and could possibly make other places think it is okay to do this.

  • I think that the fish cannery probably had an influence in the decision to really start pushing for this road to be built, but it's not completely known. They want a better transportation so it makes sense.  I don't think that the road should be built because this is a major home to many forms of wildlife. Creating a road would destroy many animals' homes and would destroy wildlife.  This particular road being built would have an impact on the world because other sites/roads would follow it.
