Police are sending a message directed towards motorcycle riders to be more cautious about speeding. A man was cruising down the highway at a speeds near 85 miles per hour when a young bear ran out to cross the road. The motorcyclist could not stop the motorcycle in time and hit the bear. In the video below it shows the footage live, captured by the riders helmet cam. The bear survived and ran off into the woods. The motorcyclist is okay, and left the scene with broken bones and a concussion. The police are really putting an emphasis on motorcyclist being careful about speeding and wearing protective gear.
I know I have seen motorcyclist pass me on the interstate going well over the speed limit. It scares me to see some of these riders not wearing helmets or the right clothes for it. According to http://www.americanmotorcyclist.com/Rights/State-Laws.aspx?stateid=15 a helmet is not required for motorcyclist in the state of Iowa for on-road riders. Do you think that this law should be changed? Should motorcyclist be forced to wear helmets because of dangerous situations like this one?

I don't think they should be forced to. It's their life. If they want to risk it, so be it. They don't need the government telling them what is really common sense.
I think it is ultimately the riders choice. If they do make this law a lot of people angry. It is their life in their own hands and i believe it is their decision.
I think motorcyclists need to wear helmets. In a car, you have airbags protecting you. On a motorcycle, you have a helmet, and if there's no helmet, you basically have nothing. The impact you would make on the road would hurt. I think motorcyclists definitely need to be wearing a helmet on the interstates and highways. Maybe around town you could be fine but you never know. A lot of accidents happen within 20 miles of your home.
I think Iowa should make this a law because a helmet could save your life. They really should enforce this more! I looked up online that Iowa is in the top 10 for motorcycle accidents and death of people for it. That is terrible! Going 85 on the highway?! On a motorcycle you are constantly changing gears, so it would be hard enough to stop instantly when you see a bear.
I agree. Good research. That is horrible that Iowa is in the top ten. I think it is a mix of speed and no helmet that tributes to these injuries.
Yes they should! I knew a guy who was in a motorcycle accident and was paralyzed. He was a friend of my Dad and when we went to visit him it was so sad. He couldn't talk, move, or ear. We had to leave so they could feed him through a tube. Anything that we could do to prevent this would be great.
Good point. It does make a difference when you know someone that has been effected by it. No one should have to go through something like that.
I think that they should make this a law because in a situation like this, it is very dangerous. But on the other hand, why are they speeding? If they know its a law and they can get a ticket for it then why speed?
True. It is their fault for speeding. It doesn't make sense why they were speeding but I think they also should have been wearing protective gear. So just in case.
