Poisonous toads infesting Florida.

Toad Busters(a Pest control person) told WPTV that due to recent rains coupled with warm temperatures sent the frogs into a breeding cycle. Resulting in thousands of Poisonous toads infesting Florida. Experts say the amphibians are bufo toads, are also known as cane toads. Cane toads are reportedly clogging pool filters, and hopping in large masses across driveways and sidewalks. The average size of an adult is 10-15cm long but females have been recorded growing up to and over 23cm. Cane Toads have poison glands on each shoulder where poison is released when they are threatened. If ingested, this venom can cause rapid heartbeat, excessive salivation, convulsions and paralysis and can result in death for many animals.

If you lived in Florida how would you deal with this? How would you keep the toads out of your home/yard and away from your family?

If it were me, I would make sure that I keep all doors shut all the time and make sure that they don't have a way into my home, then try to eliminate their food source. I would also call a pest control specialist and ask if there are any traps that I could use.

If you have pets how would you make sure they dont come incontact with the toads.

I have a dog and well dogs need to fo outside to do their doo, I would let her out and watch her to make sure shes not doing anything weird. I wouldnt take her on walks just to be safe.

  • 1. I would set traps recommended by pest control specialists and I would also make sure all cracks and gaps in my home were closed to the point where nothing could get in.

    2. I would take my pets out on leashes and monitor their activity outside. If they start sniffing around inquisitively, I'm getting them back in the house!

  • I would go to extreme measures to make sure that they didn't find their way into my home. It would be difficult to prevent them from entering my yard, but I would do my best to keep them away from my family and myself. Keeping doors and windows closed would be the first step that would hopefully eliminate any frogs from coming in. If I had pets, I would keep a close eye on them at all times and keep them by me in order to insure that they didn't come in contact with any of these poisonous frogs.

  • I don't think there would be able way to keep them out of a persons home or yard, so I would just deal with them. If I had pets I would try and keep them indoors during this time, and I would only let them out when I could watch them.

  • I don't think there would be too much that I could do but I would warn family members so that they know to be careful around these toads and to take time to make sure their the toads can't get into their homes. If I had pets I would make sure to watch them when outside or maybe even put a small fenced area for them to be protected.

  • I personally think that i would treat the toads as mice and keep doors closed and make sure the screens are hole free for my windows. I am not sure what i would do to keep them out of the yard. I would assume that there is a remedy type of thing that the frogs dont like and i could put that around my yard to prevent pets from eating them and dieing.

I do not think i would do much about my dogs because i think that the frogs will be scared of my dogs. I dont think that my dog would do much other then smell it to see if it is something tasty to eat.  Other then that i think they would avoid the toads.

  • If I lived in Flordia and this is happening, I would make sure they could not get into my house or garage by putting up some type of barrier. I would tell my family to watch out for the poisonous toads. If I had pets that need to go outside, I would keep a close eye on them to make sure that they do not come in cantact with the toad.

    • I agree with you, putting up some kind of plastice barrier would be a great way to keep the toads out. I wouold also tell all of my family members about it, they probably would already know.
