Phones in School

Phones in schools are being confiscated more and more throughout school districts in America. Kids are having to hang their phones in a pouch so they have no access to their phones. Phones are a kid's personal property and should not be taken. Students already have to follow enough rules let alone having their phones taken away. I believe the staff is abusing the rights of the individuals who attend school. For example, another previous topic was masks and will soon be a mandatory vaccine. This should be an optional thing.

If a student, however, abuses the right to have his or her phone, the guardian should be notified. The interventionist/guidance staff should reach out or meet with parents. If the situation keeps repeating, then the parent should take action. However if the child lacks discipline then the school can step in. but not all innocent students should have their property taken period after period. Lastly, in the worst case scenario the students leave their phone in their bag where they feel it is in their possession.

My next point is confidentiality. Similar to the pouches, The school does not have a right to take a selection of kids phones to look into them randomly. That has to have a search warrant in order to do so. I also think the case needs to be drastic before the district takes a student's phone or any personal belongings that they have no right to. And the last point I have is safety. If an intruder, bomb, fire, tornado or other dangerous situation occurs, it seems wise to have phones close to you in case one is able to call for help or even a parent in the event of last words. In conclusion, students should have their phone due to personal property, disciplinary, confidentiality, and lastly safety reasons.

  • Great topic choice and good summary Brock! I do think you could have backed up some of your comments with data like in your first sentence. Is that true or are you just saying that? Also, have there been any court cases about cell phone issues in schools?

Also, be sure to comment more frequently. While you did reply on three different days, most of them were done on one day.

  • I agree that keeping your phone in the pouches is a good thing, for staying focused in class. This also helps students learn better and remember more of what is being taught in class. I also agree that we should only have our phones during some times.

  • I think putting your phone in a pouch is not a big deal, I don't see any problem doing that because you don't need your phone during the class. About the school looking into phones, I think it is something that should be illegal if they don't have your concern, because it is your property and your privacy and no one should do anything without your concern.

    • I agree about schools looking into phones. It should be a crime if you take a phone without a warrant

  • I think phones should be allowed in school, because students have to learn how to focus on one thing. When you get a job later, your employer is not going to take your phone, because he expects you to concentrate on your work. Students coud learn that in school. They could leave their phone in their bag and when a teacher sees that someone is on their phone, then he can take it away from him.

    • I agree that having phones now can very well prepare us for the future. I also agree that if a student abuses the right to have their phone then a teacher can take it.

  • I think that students should be able to have their phones in class as long as it is not a distraction from what they are learning. I also think that it is anoying to have to put phones in the holder everyday at the start of class. I think that as long as students are not using their phones in class they should be able to have them in class.

  • I agree with you that students should have their phones at all times because we never know when something like you said intruder, bomb, fire, tornado, or other dangerous situations could occur. Students should be able to access their phones throughtout the day and innocent kids shouldn't be punished when they're not the problem in the first place.

  • I agree with you because you have a good point with the intruder, bomb, fire and tornado situation. We need to have contact with people if something like that were to happen. I also agree because our phones are our property. You have very good points about if they are abusing the right to have his or her phone. Students should be allowed to have their phone at all times at least in their bag. You're right about us having enough rules let alone us having rules on our own phone as well.

    • Yes safety concerns are a big point in this discussion. It could save lives in the right event. Contacting parents should be allowed. Also if there are family issues I think the individual should be able to keep their phone close to them.
