About 50% of the Philadelphia Police and Fire Departments are vaccinated. The Philadelphia Fire Department has about 2,800 firefighters and EMTs and the Police Department has reported that 3,562 members have been vaccinated, which is half of the force. The cities overall vaccination rate is about 47%, but the police officers and firefighters had access to the vaccine months before the civilians.
Philadelphia officials are considering mandating vaccines but that could cause a strike in the police force. A large government agency in the city, SEPTA, has employed a $100 incentive for firefighters and police officers to get the vaccine. Four police officers and two firefighters have died of Covid-19 and they are still not getting the vaccine. Carolyn Cannuscio, director of research at the Center for Public Health Initiatives at the University of Pennsylvania says, ”In their day-to-day work, they do valiant things to protect human lives, this is one potent, powerful protective force that our first responders and law enforcement officials should take to protect the communities they all signed up to protect.”
I think there is no reason that the police officers and firefighters should not get the vaccine, especially with the $100 incentive. As a police officer or a firefighter, you need to set an example for the people. If important people don't get the vaccine, it is likely that many others will follow. If the Chief of Police gets the vaccine it is also likely that more police officer will get it. Vaccines help the people that police officers and firefighters protect, so it should probably be mandated; however, that could cause a strike which could cause more deaths.
What do you think about this situation?
What would be a good way to resolve this issue?

Well done overall Ian! A lot of your comments where you agree with people that it is up to the person does kind of go against your points in your last paragraph. It's ok to disagree with people.
I think it is wrong that people are forced to get the vaccine or they will loose thier job. Everyone should have the right to choose wether they want the vaccine or not. I don't blame any person that refuses to get the vaccine because no one knows the long term affects that it will give and problems it could cause.
I feel that the vaccine should not be required for them to do there jobs. It's their choice if they want to get it or not. I think it's wrong that people would almost be forced to get the vaccine just to keep their job. I think the easiest way to resolve the problem would be to let people do their own thing and have their own opinions on the vaccine.
I believe that no person should be forced to inject themselves with a "vaccine" that seemed to have been made very quickly. I believe it is the persons choice whether they get the vaccine or not. I think this problem can be resolved just by the government stopping pushing the vaccine on everyone and everything. I believe that there are MANY reasons one wouldn't want to get the vaccine, such as not knowing the long term side effects.
I agree that there could be long term side-effects and that it should not be mandated.
I think that the covid vaccine should not be requiered for anyone that does not want to get the vaccine, however I also think that anyone that does get the vaccine should not push anyone else to get it. The vaccine is a choice and should not be requiered for everyday life.
I think thatthey shouldn't have to get the vaccine because it's there choice. Sure it might help protect thet people that they are protecting and or saving, but still. I personally don't think there is a good way to solve this because no matter the solution theres always going to be people that protest and refuse.
I also think it would be good to not mandate it because the police officers and firefighters could protest and maybe quit their jobs.
I think that everyone should have there on decision to get the vaccine because it should be your choice and your choice only. People have rights to make there own decisions on it. I don't think it should be mandated because you can still get it with the vaccine.
I think having the vaccine is a choice not a mandate. Some people have had bad reactions in the past so in result they aren't fond of getting another shot. Also they made it this far and now they are being forced to get it 2 years later?
