A new learning program has came to schools in Kansas called Summit Learning. It promotes an educational approach called 'personalized learning." The platform was developed by Facebook engineers. It allows for students to complete work at their own pace and is fitted to individual abilities and their needs and interests. The teacher no longer teaches the class, but is more of a mentor. They help with your assignments as needed and meet with you for 10 minutes a week to check your progress. Many familes in the Kansas towns enbraced the change at first. Students then started coming home with headaches and hand cramps. Some even said they felt more anxious. In a school district survey of middle school parents, 77% said they preferred their child not be in using the new program. More than 80% said their children had expressed concerns about the platform.
Would you want to learn with a program like Summit Learning instead of a classroom led by a teacher? Why or why not?
I would not want to use a program like Summit becuase I learn better when a teacher explains it instead of figuring it out on your own on a computer.
What concerns or benefits would you have about using a program like Summit?
Like it said in the article more students are having more anxiety and headaches. I don't think students learn as well on a computer. Although, I like it because you are allowed to work at your own pace and don't have to worry avout the teacher going too fast.

Well done Grace!
I would like it becuase I get to learn at my own pace but then I would never want to do my work or learn anything. I wouldn't be getting the help from someone that knows what there doing and what if something goes wrong with the website they are using.
I would want the teacher to teach the lessons because I understand it better when the content is taught to me, not when I have to learn it myself. If I had to learn it alone, I would struggle more with understanding it and in the long run, it would not benefit me. The fact that students were having more headaches and higher anxiety levels really worries me because I know that would be a problem for me. It would be nice, though, if I could go at my own pace because sometimes teachers do go too fast.
I would rather learn by a classroom led by a teacher. I think this because no matter how "individualized" a computer program is, I will always vouch for a teacher instead. I just think that learning from an actual human is better than a electronic device. Also, too much screen time can lead to headaches. I have one concern; a computer isn't as good as a teacher is at teaching.
I think that I would rather learn from a teacher, but I can see how this would have many benefits. Since not all teachers have time to help out every single child, a webiste that could do this would be very beneficial.
I feel like "working at your own pace" might just cause students to get lazy and refuse to do their asignments on time since there appears to be no consequence. A large part of school is not just the education you receive but the experiences and life lessons that come with it. When you grow up and get a job or go to college, there are going to be deadlines and you dont always get to choose to "work at your own pace". I think this program might be screwing up kids for their futures.
I also think that students will be lazy and won't due it because there is no time limit and they can just say that they work slow, so they get more time to do it. You can't learn from a computer the things you learn from a teacher. Like life lessons which you had mentioned.
I would not want to lean anything new teachers already tech us everything we already know so theres nothing i would want to know
I wouldent really have a problem with but it says kids are getting headacks and have more stress so i gues my concern would be maby its to much screen time for the kids
I would not want to use it because I don't like learning on my own, i like it when a teacher explains what im learning to me. I think some concerns are yes the students having more anxiety and headaches. Some students learn really well on computers but others do really bad. I also like it because you are allowed to work at your own pace and don't have to worry about catching up.
I think the idea of it is good but it is poorly executed. A classroom lead by a teacher is definetly better because the teacher can be there to help the child if they have a problem. It is good because it lets the children go at their own pace. Kids coming home with headaches and anxiety is definetly a concern I have about the platform.
