Barely an hour after zookeepers heard the mother panda honk in distress, veterinarians pronounced her cub dead Sunday morning.
Staff at the Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington said they were heartbroken by the newborn giant panda cub's death, just six days after.
"The keepers, the veterinarians, the volunteers were watching this cub and this birth with great joy (and) with great passion," National Zoo Director Dennis Kelly told reporters Sunday. "The loss, there's no other word for it, it's just devastating."
There were no outward signs of trauma or infection, the zoo said, and it was not immediately clear what caused the cub's death.

Awh. Poor Cub! I fell bad for the mommy Panda Bear. I hope that they can figure out why the cub had died. Make sure it doesn't happen agian. I love Panda's. If i could, i would have one as a pet!
It is sad that the panda died and that they don't know how it died I hope that they find out what happened to the baby so that it isn't a big mystery and they don't have to keep wondering what happened to it.
That is sad because arent pandas an endangered species. I would of loved to see the cub live but then that is life not everyone gets to live.
this is very sad because pandas are my favorite type of bear and there is not very many of them and nobody wants to see a panda die.
thats really sad...i like pandas! but it sounds like the baby panda died unexpectedly so i have to wonder if it died during open hours. Because that would be terrifying watching a panda die :(
Awh that is really sad. I hope that they can figure out what happened to cause the cub to die. I feel bad for the mama panda, because it's probably traumatizing. I hope that the mother panda can still have more cubs because they are endangered.
Awh this is so sad. I cant believe the little cub died and i feel bad for the panda about lossing her baby.
Its very sad that the panda died so young. When i think of a baby panda i think of that youtube video of the baby panda sneezing and scaring its mom.
that would have to suck for the zookeepers. and i feel bad for the momma panda
Aww... I love all animals.. well most but especially panda bears! they are too cute! so this is so sad! the poor little panda. :(
