Oscar Tuesday (10-4)

November is a really good time to release a movie, especially around Thanksgiving. But is it a good time to release movies that have Oscar potential? In some cases, yes.Right away on November 4th we have two comedies, both with big stars and set pieces, and no chance of Oscar nominations, at least right now. Tower Heist and Harold and Kumar 3, just in case you don't know. On the 9th is J. Edgar, a film directed by Clint Eastwood (Gran Torino, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly) and starring Leonardo DiCaprio (Inception, Titanic), Naomi Watts (King Kong), and Judi Dench (Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace). So there are quite a few nominations: Best Supporting Actress, Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Picture.Next weekend, the 11th, there's Immortals and Jack and Jill, one a comedy, the other an action fantasy film. Neither have real nods from the Academy. \On the 18th, we have two sequels: Happy Feet Two and Breaking Dawn. Unless Happy Feet 2 is dragging its feet to unhappy, it's likely to be nominated for Best Animated Film, and Twilight, come on people. Then finally, on the 23rd, just before Thanksgiving, we have Arthur Christmas, an animated Santa story, Hugo, a drama directed by Martin Scorcese (Raging Bull, The Departed, Goodfellas), The Muppets, and Piranha 3DD, a horror comedy. Obviously Hugo has the greatest chance, but what could it be nominated for? Best Director and Best Picture? Yes, of course, but with a strong cast (Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen, Jude Law, Ray Winstone, Christopher Lee, and Richard Griffiths), there are lots of possibilites.Next week we'll look at December, and the week after, the first guesses for nominations.

  • Looks like the only thing I'm planning on seeing is Breaking Dawn. I hope it's as good as the book was, but it's Twilight. So probably not...):
