Oscar Tuesday (10-11)

For the last few weeks, we've been looking at the Oscar potentials for the next Academy Awards in 2012, celebrating the films of 2011. We have made our way to December, and here they are.The first weekend of December, the 2nd, has no releases, but on December 9th, there are three. Two stand no chance: a comedy (The Sitter), a romantic comedy (New Year's Eve), but one does: Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. This film has recieved mass critical acclaim due to its release in the U.K. four weeks ago, and is now stirring up some Oscar potential. First off, Colin Firth could be nominated for Best Supporting Actor. Gary Oldman could be nominated for Best Actor. Bridget O' Connor and Peter Straughan are bound to be nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay. Tomas Alfredson has a good chance of Best Director. And finally, Best Picture is in sight. This is one to watch for. There is also one small release, Young Adult, from the directing and writing team of Juno. Charlize Theron, who has already won an Oscar, has a chance of being nominated again, and young director Jason Reitman has been nominated twice already, but three times could be the charm. Also count on a Best Picture nomination if the film gets enough attention.Next weekend, the 16th, sees a few big movies, but not worth talking about when it comes to Academy Awards. However, the 21st (a Wednesday) sees a few potentials. Mission: Impossible 4 has very little chance of any major nominations, but both The Adventures of Tintin and The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo have some chance. Maybe its more likely for the later since it is directed by David Fincher, who has been nominated a few times as Best Director, and also a strong cast, including Daniel Craig (Best Actor), Rooney Mara (Best Actress), and even the supporting cast could have a few (Stellan Skarsgard and Christopher Plummer for Best Supporting Actor, and Robin Wright Penn for Best Supporting Actress), and finally, Steve Zaillian for Best Adapted Screenplay as well. The 23rd sees We Bought a Zoo, with Cameron Crowe, Best Director nominee for Jerry Maguire, and if this one clicks, it might get a couple, but don't count on it.And finally, on Christmas Day, War Horse is released. It could take the Lord of the Rings and Titanic route by having lots of wins in smaller categories, but then win Best Director (Steven Spielberg) and Best Picture.Next week, we'll sum up all the possibilites and have them for all of the major categories.
