One Year in Space

After almost one year living in space, Scott Kelly has successfully returned to Earth.  Upon arriving from 340 days spent without Earth’s gravity at the International Space Station, Kelly and his Russian crew mates underwent several tests of vision, balance, and strength. This 340 days that the crew spent in space has shattered the United States record of longest space journey and allowed Kelly to become the new record holder of most cumulative days in space (at 520 days).

However, Kelly has announced his retirement. He said the “year-in-space mission was a challenge for all involved” and that he is “humbled and excited by new opportunities to support and share the amazing work NASA is doing.” Although Kelly has no further plans of returning to space again, he is allowing his body to be studied for the effects of long-term spaceflight.

  • Would you be interested in going to space? Why or why not?
  • What challenges do you think astronauts face while in space?

I think that it would be extremely cool to go into space. However, I also think that it would be a big task and would take major training. I think that going to space would be cool because the universe is huge, and there is so much you can learn and see. Astronauts probably face several day-to-day challenges, but I think the emotional struggle of not being on Earth is probably the hardest to overcome.

  • Excellent!

  • I think going to space would be an amazing and unforgettable experience, but I don't know if I have the guts to do it. Besides the number of physical challenges they have, I think mentally it would be really hard to be away from home, people, and just Earth in general with trees and grass. I would get very homesick and bored.

  • I think it would be very cool to go to space but I probably wouldn't just because I wouldn't want to take the risk and I also would probably be very scared to be that far away from home. I think they face lots of challenges. They face problems everyday like getting used to the new gravity, new diet, being homesick, getting lost in space, something going wrong on the rocket, etc. It's just very dangerous and I can see why he wants to retire.

  • It would be interesting to see how things work up in space, like you can only imagine it while your down on earth but actually seeing it would be awesome, then again it would get boring cause nothing is up there and nothing to do. Challenges of going up into space is probably getting bored and getting sad not being able to see anyone but the people on the ship for a year

  • I think it would be cool to go to space but I would be too  scared.  Like riding airplanes on vacation is good but I would be scared that I would get stuck in space. It would be an amazing experience but I would like to stay down on Earth.

  • I think going into space would be cool, but I wouldn't do it because you have to be up there for so long. I think the biggest thing astronauts face I think is a mix of fear and homesickness.

  • At this point in life I probably wouldn't have the guts to go to space if I got he chance. I would actually probably be super scared to be so far out of the planet. Although it sounds super fun, and would be an awesome experience, I don't think I would be able to. There are multiple things that could go wrong and you don't know how long you could be out there for. There are probably many challenges that they face physically and mentally.
    • You would definitely have to be extremely brave to go to space! I agree with you because, like you said, so many things could go wrong! It would be extremely cool but you'd be taking a huge risk!

  • Yes I would be interested to go to space because then you could see the world in a whole new perspective. There would be so much to see that we have never seen before. I think it would be hard to eat some of the food there, I feel like it would be a little different.

    • I agree! You could literally see the world in a whole new perspective (one from outer space). I think that all of the discoveries that astronauts make would make the training totally worth it.
