At least one third of Offutt Air Force Base is underwater. Leaving at least thirty buildings damaged in the flood. This includes the 55th Wing headquarters and the two major aircraft maintenance facilities. Some buildings have been flooded with up to 8 feet of water. They 11,700 foot runway is also submerged. Because of the flooding they had to fly out nine of the 33 reconnaissance jets. Thankfully no planes have been damaged. Also, 1,600 workers have been relocated to other buildings. My Dad, who works on Offutt in the 55th Wing Headquarters, was told not to come into work until further notice due to the flooding. The flooding has caused nearly 30 million dollars in damaged so far, and there is no sign of it clearing up anytime soon.

1.) Have you ever been to Offutt AFB? If yes, what was your experience like? If no, would you like to visit the base?

Yes, since my dad has been stationed here twice I have been on base many times. It is a very cool place to visit or walk around. I also love going in the hanger with my Dad and seeing the planes.

2.) What would you do if you were someone who was relocated due to flooding?

I think I would be in shock that the place I work was underwater. It would also be stressful because you don't know when you will be able to return there.

  • Good overall Kate. Be sure to comment on three different days.

  • Yes, I have been there for the airshows and it was really cool.

I would hate it because I would have to adjust to a new place.

  • I have never been to the Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, I feel like it would be cool to visit it at some point but I wouldn't know because I've never been to an air force base. If my family had to be relocated, I would be very sad. It would be devastating to lose most of what I owned in a flood.

  • I've been to Offutt a couple of times when I was younger but I don't really remember what the base was like. This is going to be one of the floods that we will be talking about for years like the 2007 flood. Many people who have been displaced should have made better decisions and not live in a flood plain.

  • I've been to Offut a number of times and given its location, its not a surprise that it is underwater. I would definitely visit again, because it is an amazing and important complex to our nation. I can't say I would help someone who was relocated due to flooding, because the people who buy these houses should already have a good idea of what they are getting themselves into.

    • My dad was talking to me about the location and I am not surprised it's underwater either. It would be hard to help people because I wouldn't want to injure myself or other in the process. Plus they have people who's job is helping people in these situations.

  • All this flooding has been terrible to watch. My own basement got flooded and my family had to dig a river through our backyard because we live at the bottom of a hill. However, the damage to our house is nothing compared to others. I see pictures of others who have their entire basements filled with water with their houses practically submerged in a lake. It's really terrible to watch and I wish there was something I could do to help.

    • I agree with you, watching the flooding has been horrible to watch. Our basement got flooded as well. I am just thankful it wasn't worse. I've seen pictures of towns submergerd under water.

  • No but I think it would be cool to experience going there and having the experience you had. I would be shocked and worried about other people in the flooding and be concerned about my family members and I would want to make sure everyone made it out okay. I would alse be very dissapointed to see my house go, also.

    • It is a really cool experience. I think I would be worried about my co-workers and what the move to a new base would do to them. If I lived on base I would be scared the water would affect myself and my family.
