Last week Joe Biden announced that starting just as soon as September 2021, nursing home staff must be fully vaccinated from COVID-19 or they could lose federal Medicare or Medicaid funding for their facilities. This will target over 15,000 skilled nursing facilities relying on federal funds. There is a lot of controversy on this new mandate.

While mandating the vaccine to nursing home staff will be very beneficial to keeping all staff and residents safe, it will also cause the nursing homes to lose staff. Everyone has their own opinion and beliefs on COVID-19 and the vaccine. The staff who refuse to get the vaccine in nursing homes will lose federal funds, which may lead them to just leaving their job. This will result in nursing homes running low on staff, which is a huge concern.

In my opinion, I don’t believe nursing home staff should be forced to get the vaccine. As I understand it helps keep residents and other staff safe and could help nursing homes to allow visitors again, I still think it’s your body and your choice. A person shouldn’t have to risk losing federal funding, or even their job, for a vaccine they may not want or believe in.

Feds Say Nursing Home Staff Must Get COVID Vaccine

Do you think nursing home staff should be mandated to get the vaccine?

Is putting federal funds on the line too much?

  • Great topic choice and well done Caitlin!

  • I belive that the workers should not have to have the shot because it is up to them to decide if they want to get it or not. No one else should be able to tell you that you have to get it. I think that it is very good if workers do have the covid vaccine but it should be up to them if they want to get it.

  • I don't think they should have to get the shot.  It is America and we shouldn't be required to.  We should be free to make our own choice.  If you take away the money that is only going to hurt the patients.  That is not right

  • I think nursing home staff should be mandated to get the vaccine because it is more than beliefs or ideas, we are talking about science and about a pandemic situation. I think it's the right decision for prioritizing the health and life of everyone. I also think that the government wouldn't give you something that would make you any bad especially in this situation. Covid is not a new disease so it's not like they don't have investigations about this, that's also one of the reasons the vaccine was created really fast.

  • I agree with you and understand your standpoint, but unfortunatley the elders are more at risk. It would be very wise to get the vaccine just so you can protect them just for their sake. I wouldn't want to say it's mandatory but highly reccomdended. But if it has to be required I wouldn't be against it. Now, on the federal funds and losing their job over the vaccine thats where I could disagree. Yes, I think you should lose funds on not getting the vacccine for the nursing homes, but some people have their reasons for not getting the vaccine weather they can't afford it, medical issues, etc. But overall I wouldn't be against the idea of the vaccine being mandatory.

  • I think that if you work with elderly and people who are more at risk, it is selfish if you won't get the vaccine. It can put elderly at risk. I also think that unless you are an ally for the pro choice movement, you cannot use the "my body my choice" statement. Putting federal funds on the line is too much though. They should just fire the people who refuse to help people. It is their body but they know that the elderly is at risk and are being selfish about it. They should not work in health care unless they are understanding about what comes with the job. Its a shot.

    • I understand where your coming from, but the staff can still get the virus and transfer it to the elders. The elders are the ones more at risk, so even if staff do get the vaccine it may protect themselves from dying, but its not really doing any good to help stop the virus from getting to the residnets at the nursing home. I don't think a person is shelfish for not wanting to put a vaccine in their body that we know so little about.

  • I think that nursing home staff should not be mandated to get the vaccine by the government. If anything, I think that it should be under the discretion of the nursing homes. I also believe that nobody should be forced to get the vaccine considering how new it is and how little we know about long term affects.

  • I personally don't think that nursing home staff should have to get the vaccine if they don't want it because like you said it's thier body, thier choice. However, I can understand why Biden want's nursing home staff to get the vaccine to help protect all the residents in the homes. I think that putting federal funds on the line is to much becuase these people went to school and are getting paid to help these people, not getting forced to get the vaccine.

  • In my opinion nursing home staff should be vaccinated because they are working on a place where they challange with COVID 19 and it is for their own health actually. Since they are serving to people they must stay vaccinated too. But i think losing federal funds is too much of an punishment, which i think is wrong.  I think  government should find a better way to encourage vaccinating other than cutting funds.
