Not Car Jacking, but Car Hacking

The recent Consumer Electric Show was now bringing up concern for the drivers of the latest technological cars. The University of California in Santa Barbra has recently conducted experiments and studies on car technologies. What they found was extremely disturbing, that is the ability to hack into someone's car, and control it through their own computer. Now with many experiments, researches found that hackers can disable the brake system, track any phone calls made in the car, unlock doors at any time, and take over WiFi connections. In some cases, the hackers can have the ability even shake the wheel of the car, causing it to kill not only the driver, but others on the highway as well.

Although it has been discovered that car hacking is possible, it's still extremely hard to 'crack the code'. Many cars have technology built inside them, but they aren't all the same, making it very complicated for the hacker to figure out the system in each car. Researches do believe that it will be easier for this hacking to take place in the future, but many car companies are still working on trying to prevent this.

Do you think this discovery will make people think twice about getting cars with the latest technology? Should the car dealerships stop selling the cars that have a higher chance of being hacked?

  • Excellent job once again!!

  • I think it will make them think twice indeed. This is a dangerous hobby these twisted people are fooling around with. I believe the car dealerships should stop selling the cars that have a higher chance of being hacked, and try to install some firewall or security system into the vehicle to keep anonymous hackers out.

  • I believe that there are very skilled hackers out there. However, there are also intelligent people working together to fix this problem. I wouldn't worry about this issue simply because I had never heard of this happening before and it seems pretty uncommon, in my opinion. I think that someone will find a solution to this problem in the near future.

  • I think that cars are getting a little to high techy nowadays. But that is just me.

  • I don't really think that it will make that many people rethink the option of getting a new car with all the gadgets. I do not think that we should stop selling these vehicles nor should the car companies stop making them because the car industry is huge in our economy! All cars have the chance to be hacked, but I think that we should learn and adapt to the new technology and figure out a way to shut out hackers.

    • This is all very true, Ellen, and I believe that we will never be able to defeat the bad guys, which in this case are hackers, but we need to make things more complicated so that it is nearly impossible to hack things. No matter what great invention there is out there, there will always be someone that will abuse it or ruin it for other unfortunately.

      • So do you believe in having technology in the car? Or do you just support future technology that could stop hackers?

        • I support both because we need technology in cars these days in order to keep us safe. The only scary thought is that someone could have access to it, which if they were, I'm sure it wouldn't be to help you parallel park, but to kill you or injure others. Again with great technology can come great risks such as information being lost or in this case, it being taken over and not being able to have any control over it.

  • Cars shouldn't have computers installed in them anyway! it's all distractions. all you should have in a car is a/c, radio, and a steering wheel.

    • I agree that the car has too many distractions in the car. There really shouldn't be any technology in the car unless it were for a safety feature, which in some cases I feel like it's just another distraction, like you said, that keeps your eyes off the road.
