North Korea Ceases Nuclear Missile Tests

Last Friday the leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un, announced they will no longer test nuclear weapons like they did for most of 2017. While this may sound like good news to us, we soon were told that the Kim Jong Un is only stopping because he knows how destructive they are and they need no more testing. Trump stated in a tweet that Pyongyang agreed with the US to stop testing the nuclear weapons and dismantle any they had to prevent them from using any against another country. The city of Pyongyang has stopped testing but refuses to scrape their warheads. Trump has threatened to not lift sanctions off of North Korea if they don't comply. This would be a major blow to North Koreas economy since they are already economically behind.

Trump plans a private meeting with Kim Jong Un to address the issue but it is uncertain how it will go. Trump plans to negotiate a treaty with China and North Korea which will have them lay down their arms and end the Korean War. But, just because North Korea says they are halting all tests of nuclear weapons, doesn't mean they still won't use them. Kim has successfully tested a nuclear warhead which can reach the shores of the US and a nuclear bomb that is seven times more powerful than "little boy" dropped on Hiroshima.

Questions:

Why do you think North Korea has been so hostile towards the US these past few years?

Do you think the peace treaty to end the Korean War will actually follow through?

Answers:

I feel as though Kim Jong Un looks towards Japan as a source of inspiration back in WWII. A small country overlooked which rose up and became one of the most feared and powerful militaries of all time. Kim Jong Un is very unhappy with the way we run things over here in the US and sees Democracy as a disease. All of the people look to him as a king and he rules them through terror so they are oblivious to what is going on in the real world. It is somewhat like the book by George Orwell titled "1984".

I do not think the peace treaty will follow through. North Korea is a stubborn country, much like Japan in WWII, and will not admit defeat so easily. Maybe it will follow through. but I do not believe North Korea will hold up their end of the bargain and stop their building of nuclear warheads. It is impossible to monitar closely since very few people are allowed in the country.

  • Well done Niall!

  • Yes they threated the entire country that they were going to bomb huge cities, for the last few years. Korean children sing songs about hating the american people. For a certain amount of time it will last.

  • I think that North Korea is just trying to gain some world power and they are trying to get people to think that they are powerful enough to attack the United States or other countries at any moment. I think that maybe the treaty will work for a little bit at first, but then one country will end up breaking it to use more nuclear weapons.

    • They are definetly trying to show their might. And the treaty (If they even make one) will defiently fall flat. Even with the treaty, there is no way to make sure Kim and North Korea will keep there word. They could easily make secret nuclear bombs without anyone knowing and launch them at random.

  • I think North Korea strives to become a major world power, and they believe the best way to acheive this is by intmidating the other world powers like the United States. I don't know if this is necessarily working because Trump doesn't seem nervous about North Korea at all, but other US citizens are definitely worried. Typically in history, treaties work for a while but are eventually broken. I think history will repeat itself, and somehow, the treaty from the Korean War will be broken.

    • I feel like their intimidation is working a bit since everyone is pretty scared of a nuclear war breaking out. I have to give Trump credit for stying calm under this pressure because if he was worried, it would amplify the populations nerves ten fold. If your leader can't stay calm under this situation, how can the rest of the country?

  • North korea is still upset over the korean war and kim jong un has made america into a enemy his nation rallies aganist. recently there have been less threating responses from north korea providing hope we will see peace.

    • I do feel like North Korea is still upset about how the Korean War went down. They feel like they are under us and are trying to rise up to show the world that we can't mess with them again. There threats seem pretty stale though since they still haven't shown how their rockets work and if they could indeed do as much damage as Kim says.

  • 1. Maybe because back in the days the american help the South Korea when the North try to invade the south.

    2.  I don't know it depend how the people feel that day and if they reach a agreement.

  • I think that because North Korea has been behind for a number of years they are just trying to regain world power. I don't think that it will go through, but I do hope it does go through. I don't have a real reason why I don't think that it will go through, I just don't think they are there yet.
