No More Masks

As most of you know the school now says that masks are optional for students, but the real question is how did we get there. As a lot of people know Jameson Bieker was suing the school over forcing us to wear masks for religious and medical reasons. Many people don't agree with what he was doing. Tuesday night I was sent a message saying that enough was enough and that we were going to show up to school on Wednesday with no masks on. Masks weren't the reason I chose to stand up; it was more about the way the school was handling things. On Wednesday we were imediately sent to the office and moved to the auditorium. When I was sent in there were only five people in there but by the end of the day we were around 30 people.

The next day started and we were told we had to stay in the library all day and do remote learning. I recieved comments from many people saying that we were in the library having fun and that we shouldn't have been rewarded. None of those people realize that it wasn't a cake walk to be in there. I was constantly being called names and looked at like I was an animal in a zoo. I had the same rules as a normal person in school. We weren't allowed to use our phone during the class period. We couldn't talk during the class period either. We had to use the bathroom in the hallway between the library and the office. Being in the library was very different then what a lot of people thought it was.

In the end all of the protesting and sitting in the library turned out the way we wanted. Masks are now optional in school. I was at the board meeting when it was announced and the crowd broke out into applause. School on Monday is going to be very interesting to see how people feel about the new regulations and what they are going to choose to do. I think that this was the most repectful and peaceful way we could protest the school.

Do you think there were better ways we could have done this?

Were you in the library or auditorium?

How do you feel about the ways we were treated and do you think we it should have been different?

  • I think we could have done this in a more civil way, however, it did work and i am glad that it did. I was not in the library or the auditorium. I personally don't think the school should have seperated people like they did. I think they should have just gone with what they had been doing.

  • This was done in the most peaceful manner conceivable, in my opinion. We didn't set fire to buildings or do anything else nefarious; we just didn't put on our masks. What they did, I believe, successfully brought attention to the issue and rectified it in the most effective manner possible.

  • I personally didn't see a point in protesting since I don't think that wearinga mask is sucha big deal and since there were just two weeks left of school, which is why I wasn't in the auditorium. I personally still wear a mask since I'll have to take an international flight in the next few weeks and by getting covid I wouldn't be able to do that since you get tested a few days before.

  • I think the protest people did was not the right way to go, however it did work. I was not involved in the protest because there two weeks of school left and i just simply followed the rules. I dont think masks were a huge deal. If i had the choice like i do now, I wouldn't wear one. Since we didn't have a choice till a coupls days ago, I just wore it. I do not wear it now.

  • I think that there were better ways we could have done this but we can't go back and change that. I was not in the auditorium because I had my mask on but I didn't wear it right. I was considering going in there but I didn't want to miss stuff in classes.

  • I think that this should have been handled differently by the administraion, but I am glad that they are now opitional, but I would still wear it in the halls and/or if someon easked me too out of respect. I personally wasnt in the libray.

  • I think there were better ways to treat the situation but it had to be done I think they should have lifted the mask thing a long time ago beucase they had to let us breath and 2 minutes out of the 43 mins time frame for the class period not gonna cut it. I was not in the libriary but tempted to. But i need some work done and did not to miss any class work. How I think that we got treated I think we got treated pretty bad always on our butts about having the mask down and not having it on. And when they lift it they act like nothing happend.

  • Personally I believe the mask rules at HCHS were more strict then they needed to be. I still ofcourse abided by the rules and kept my mask on. Personally I think the way they went about it was extreme, especially considering we only have a few days left of school.

  • I think the way we handled this ended just fine and it worked. I wasn't involved with the protests because I didn't see the point in it because there was only 2 weeks left of school. I can see why you would have done something for next school year but we had a good chance of having no masks next school year anyway. I think we should've just let the school year finish but its over now.

  • I think that the way we handled things were just fine. I stayed n my own lane and I supported from the outlines. I didn't join in the peaceful protest because I wasnt going to zoom into my classes, but what they did was alright in my opinion. I did not agree with the Bieker sueing the school over masks. They were following the reccomended CDC guilde lines which I believe is totally alright. I love the no masks alot. We are all very happy and thats what matters.
