Nike Dropped Because of Kaepernick

Nike decided to feature former NFL player Colin Kaepernick in their most recent ad, advertising Nike's 30th anniversary of the "JustDoIt" campaign. Kaepernick started kneeling for the American flag during the national anthem in his 2016 NFL season with the 49ers and some people began to follow this trend. Featuring him caused nationwide disruption. Most public opinions express outrage and confusion. CNN quoted President Trump saying, "NFL players who refuse to stand shouldn't be in [the] U.S." Colleges and schools in Missouri are getting rid of all their Nike apparel, sending the message that they are choosing "country over company" in response to Nike's ad. People all over the U.S. have started burning and cutting Nike apparel too. Some schools have created a mandatory class which promotes love for the country and teaches about American heritage. Other schools have installed a rule that all participants and coaches must show respect for the American flag and the national anthem.

What do you think about Nike featuring Colin Kaepernick in their most recent ad?

I think that it was not a smart move for the company. Most people don't support Kaepernick kneeling for the flag and disrespecting the country so this will most likely cause an even bigger decrease in sales than what has already occurred.

How do you feel about continuing to wear/buy Nike apparel?

I believe that continuing to wear/buy Nike apparel depends on what your opinion on the subject is. Personally, I will continue to wear the Nike apparel that I already own, but I don't think that I will be buying more any time soon.

  • Excellen job Brecken!

  • I feel like Nike made a good choice, because what is everyone talking about right now, nike, they got a point acrossed and are known by many now whether its for a good reason or bad. This won't affect me wearing nike apparel, as I think it is a good product and something like this shouldn't affect my opinion.

  • I think that it was a vert stupid idea for Nicke to feature this NFL man. I feel that that Nike is going to lose a bunch of there customers because of this ordeal. Personally I think that wearing the Nike apparel that you already own and have bought before Nike sighed Colin Kaepernick is fine. But I think it would be a stupid idea to buy more apperal.

  • I think they shouldn't have put Colin Kaepernick in that ad because sportswear shouldn't have anything to do with politics. I also think that if they didn't advertise it they wouldn't loose all of their customers. I will keep wearing my nike clothes that I have but i will not be buying nike clothes any time soon unless they stop advertising it.

  • I believe he disrespected the National Anthem by kneeling. He says he sacrificed a lot by doing that but I don't think he did because there are a lot of people that give up more than what he did. For example; Military, parents that work mulitiple jobs to support their familes because they don't get to spend time with their kids and see them grow up. I have bought a lot of Nike in the past but I am not 100% sure if i will buy fro them in the future.

  • While I support everyone's right to protest, disrespecting the flag and what it represents is not the way to do it. Nike said in their advertisement that Colin Kaepernick "sacrificed everything," while there are troops dying overseas to protect our flag. They are the ones who sacrificed everything, not some second round quarterback who stands on the sideline and makes millions of dollars. I probably will start buying more Under Armour products now, but do not plan to do anything crazy with my curent Nike clothing. Under Armour has always been more patriotic anyway.

    • I agree when you say that the ad saying that Kaepernick "sacrificed everything" is over the top. I've never looked at it from the perspective of troops sacrificing absolutely everything overseas fighting for our country. Those troops are the reason that this country is free and the flag is a symbol of that freedom. Kneeling for the flag disrespects that. I don't think that the flag has anything to do with racism and inequality.

  • I think that it was a bad idea to for the company. I agree with you, many people do not support Kaepernick because he knelt and that is very disrespectful for out country. I know it is his choice, but it was not a good idea. I will continue to wear and buy nike clothing because I love there apparel.

  • I think that it will definitely impact their sales as far as business goes, but I also think it will cost them a lot of customers and collaborations with other businesses.  I think that he is a good athlete so I understand why they put him on their ad, but I think some people forget to focus on that and instead only focus on his kneeling during the anthem.  I will continue to wear and buy Nike apparel because they have high quality clothing, and I think that Colin has a right to protest that way.  I'm not going to quit buying and wearing clothes I like because of one ad, although I do disagree with Colin kneeling.

  • I think that though Nike will probably make less money after putting Kaepernick on their ad, it was worth it because it is important for big companies like Nike to support people who use the platform they have to stand up for others. As for your second question, I literally bought 2 pairs of nikes when I saw the ad :)
