Will the cruise industry survive the pandemic?

Cruises are a great fun family/friend vacation, but ever science the COVID-19 pandemic the industry has been on a downhill slide and its not looking like a bright future. Ever since March cruise companies have not been allowed to sail due to the pandemic and because the borders were closed. In February many ships were still out sailing and some actually got COVID-19 on board. The people that were aboard the ship were describing it as the “the worst and most chaotic vacation ever.” People were left on their ships in the middle of the ocean because the ports were closed and they couldn't get back in. For many days people were living in very gross conditions because the ship was getting to be full of trash and so many people were sick.  Many people said they were never going to go back on another again. Ever since then the cruise ship industry has received nothing but bad publicity. People believe that the vessels are nothing but “deadly incubators on disease.”Many people have also been upset with cruise lines because they want their money back. Cruise lines say they are doing as much as possible but many people who have booked their vacations have received nothing.

Major cruise lines have been selling their ships due to their financial difficulties due to no sailing and drastic drops in their stocks. Carnival Corporation seems to have the most financial difficulties as they have already sold 18 of their cruise vessels just this year. Whereas Royal Caribbean, disney cruise lines, and norwegian cruise lines(other major cruise companies)  have only about 5. The CDC has told the industry not to even think about sailing before 2021 as it won't be safe. On top of the bad publicity and no sailings cruise lines are going to have a hard time finding places to sail to. There are countries that have already said they will never open back up to the cruise lines because of the spread of different diseases, not just COVID-19.

In my opinion I don't think any ships should be going out until we get covid under control and have a vaccine. Although I think it is too bad that the industry is getting such a bad reputation because in my personal experience they are great fun and it really is a good vacation to go on with friends and family. Although I dont balme the people who were stuck on the ship that said they will never again go on a cruise becasue that would really ruin the experince especially if it was your first cruise. You would be stuck on a ship with 3000-5000 strangers that are all mostly sick. I do think the industry will make it, but it will just take alot of time for it to bounce back to what it was.

If you were stuck on one of the ships would you never go back or would you give it another shot once things got better?

  • Well done Stephanie! I do think you could have added another question or two.

  • I completely forgot about cruises. I'm sure the people on board a cruise right when the pandemic started were terrified and confused. I know I would've been. I think mnay of the travelers are overexaggerating. I have no clue what they went thorugh, but I know a pandemic doesn't happen every month. No one knew how to handle a virus at the time or knew how serious it was. I think it's a little extreme to say you'd never go back on a cruise, but that is what I think. I also think that cruise ines need to wait till we have a vaccine because that's just asking for more and more outbreaks.

  • I don't think I would go on cruise right now. Although the prices are very low I wouldn't want to have to social distance and wear mask the whole time. If I were stuck on a cruise ship I would give it another shot after things got better. I knew the risk of getting stuck on the cruise ship when I booked the flight.

  • I would definitely take the opportunity to get on a cruise ship with all the low prices. Personally, I am willing to take the rise of getting COVID-19. I think if people would follow the staying six feet apart, and everyone wearing a mask, we could have safe cruise vacations. I think it's just like people going on their own vacations. Just like taking a plane or driving. People are still doing those activities.

    • I agree right now would be a great time to book a vaction. Even if they had cruises right now I personly dont think it would be worth going due to the fact that you would have to be socially distant and wear masks. Lots of things that you do on cruise ships are with groups of people. Although you could follow all the restrictions while on your vaction but I think it would be more fun if you didnt have all the restrictions.

  • I would probably never go another cruise again. I already have a huge fear of large bodies of water, like oceans, and it would be so traumatic to be stuck on a cruise ship during these times. Cruises shouldn't be going on until everything is under control regarding the pandemic.

    • I agree it would be very traumatic experience.

  • I would definitely go on one of these even running the risk of getting Covid-19, Cruises and other vacations have gotten a lot more cheaper now that there is a pandemic going about, if I were on this type of trip I would have went back considering it was my own fault for taking the risk

    • I agree right now is really a good time to be booking vacations becasue of all the low prices cruises especially. One nice thing about this you caould go and book a cheap vaction now for a year or two in advance in hopes that everything will be settled down by the time of your trip.

  • I have never been on a cruise but I have only heard good things about them. If it was my first time on a cruise and it was really dirty, everyone was sick and overall a bad experience,  I would probably not go back. If I have had a good experience once before the bad trip, I think I would go again when Covid-19 settled down.
