New Releases for 9-16

This weekend three new films are being released, and one is being re-released. First up is the new Ryan Gosling violent action film Drive. Gosling (Crazy Stupid Love) also stars with Carey Mulligan (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps) and Ron Perlmen (Season of the Witch). The film is opening in 2,886 theaters, the widest release of the week, and the third highest overall. It has recieved massive critical acclaim (94% on Rotten Tomatoes movie review website) and is hoping to gain $13 million and second place. The film is rated R. Also opening this weekend is Straw Dogs, a remake of the 1971 classic, even if nobody remembers it. It stars James Marsden (Hop, Hairspray), Kate Bosworth (Superman Returns) Alexander Skarsgard (Zoolander) and James Woods (Scary Movie 2). It is opening in 2,408 theaters, the third biggest this weekend and overall fifth. It is not as popular with critics (37% on Rotten Tomatoes) and is likely to open in fifth place with $7 million. The third release this weekend is I Don't Know how She Does It with a whole bundle of stars: Sarah Jessica Parker (Sex and the City), Pierce Brosnan (Mamma Mia), and Greg Kinnear (Bad News Bears) for starters. It will be opening in 2,476 theaters, second for new releases, and overall fourth. It has been reviewed as a flop, only garning 21% on Rotten Tomatoes. It is looking for a fourth place debut with $8 million. And finally, The Lion King is coming back to theaters in 3D, opening in 2,330 theaters, and is the fourth highest for the weekend and seventh overall. An opening weekend of $15 million is expected, grabbing first place. Remember, the fall box office times are tougher. No one goes to the movies like Transformers, Harry Potter, and Pirates of the Caribbean anymore. But wait until November.

  • Alexander Skarsgard (Zoolander)?

    Must've been a tiny role.
