New Releases for 10-14

We are almost halfway through the month, and already we've seen that last week had some good movies, but now we're quickly approaching the Christmas season, the time to be jolly and see every big movie in the theater.  But this weekend still has a few that look to be in good shape.

First is the remake of the classy 1984 Kevin Bacon smash Footloose, starring many newcomers, and Dennis Quad (Soul Surfer, The Parent Trap).  It is opening in 3,549 theaters, the widest release this weekend and will be the most popular movie out there in general.  It's reviews are wish-washy (73% on Rotten Tomatoes), but its likely to open at number 1 with $19 million.

Then another remake, but this time of a film that's already been remade.  The Thing, which stars nobody that anybody would know.  The film is opening in 2,997 theaters, which is the 2nd biggest this weekend and fourth overall, and is getting very poor reception (30% on Rotten Tomatoes), so don't expect much better than 3rd place with analysts putting it at $11 million.

And finally, a relaxing, bird-watching comedy The Big Year with Steve Martin (Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, Cheaper by the Dozen), Jack Black (School of Rock), Owen Wilson (Meet the Parents trilogy), Brian Dennehy (Father from Tommy Boy), and Anjelica Houston (Addam's Family movies).  The film is getting a really bad theater count, only 2,150, but is getting surprisingly not hateful reviews (40% on Rotten Tomatoes).  A low $8 million and fourth place is expected.

With that said, this should be the last poor weekend of the year.  Next weekend is Paranormal Activity 3, the weekend after Puss in Boots, and then we're into the Christmas season.

  • I saw the trailer for Puss in Boots. Even though it's kinda for a little kids it made me laugh. I won't be going to watch Paranormal Activity. The Big Year looks like a good movie as well.

  • I'M SO EXCITED FOR PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3. I've seen the other two and i love them. They're a little scary and all but scary movies are my favorite and i think the way the Paranormal Activity movies were made is awesome.

  • The Paranormal Activity 3 trailer scared me like no other o_O I'm not sure if I want to see it or not...
