New Earth-Like Planet Found!

On August 24, 2016, NASA discovered an earth-like planet orbiting the star Proxima Centauri. The star it is orbiting is how the planet got its name, Proxima b, and is the closest Earth-like planet currently known being 4.2 light years away from Earth. The planet is approximately 1.3 times bigger than Earth and orbits its star every 11.2 days. The planet is closer to its star than Mercury is away from the sun but because Proxima Centauri is fainter and cooler than our star, it allows for a temperature that will let the planet have liquid water without being too hot to evaporate. It is still uncertain what the temperature is like but scientists are predicting that with an atmosphere it would be between 86-104 degrees Fahrenheit and without an atmosphere it would be around -40 to -22 degrees Fahrenheit. Scientists are saying that since the planet is so close we could send robotic exploration in the coming centuries.

Since NASA has found a planet that could support life, do you think there are any living beings on this planet?

If you had the chance, would you go to Proxima b? Why?

I think that since there has been a planet that could support life there could definitely be living beings on Proxima b. It may not be weird, sci-fi aliens but it could be animals similar to deer, dogs,  fish, or whales. I personally don’t think I would go to Proxima b because I’m more of a studier than an explorer and if the temperature on the planet would be -40 to -22 I would never be able to stand it for a long period of time. I would love to study Proxima b instead to help space explorers stay safe in traveling and living there.

  • Good topic and well done overall! You only commented on two different days instead of three.

  • It is possible but there is so many factors to know for sure. No i would not go because there is no proof that there is oxygen or water and if there is not water or air then we would die.

  • I think that if it could support life then there might be life on that planet because if it could hold life than there might be a living thing on the planet. I think that if I had the chance to go I would to see a new planet.

  • I think that if it can support life, then yes there is some form of life on the planet. I would go to the planet because I think that it would be cool to go space and see a new planet.

  • If this new planet can support life then I think there is a real possibility that there is living beings on it and that some may be similar to the living things on earth. If there were no risks of malfunctions with the traveling to Proxima B then I think I would go and see if there was living things on it. I would mainly be interested on its similarities with earth and earth's living things.

  • I think if it is as closely related to earth as they say then it is very possible that living organisms and water can be found on this new planet. It may only be very small and simple organisms but if they are there then there is hope that humans and many other life forms can evolve to live on the new planet. If it was my only hope for survival then yes i would, but if it wasn't necessary then no I wouldn't.

  • There is definitely a possibility that there is some form of life on Proxima B. I would probably not go to Proxima B. I am typically a person who doesn't really care for change or one of the first to try something new that could be potentially dangerous. I'm perfectly happy with my life on Earth as of right now.

  • If Proxima B is life-sustaining, so there very well could be living beings inhabiting the planet. There are most likely only small organisms living on the planet, but I am not educated enough on this topic to say that there aren’t, and I’m even less qualified to say that there are livings things.

If I had the chance, I think that it would be a positively-life-changing experience. However, I am well aware that it is impossible for anyone that is born in this lifetime to ever get the chance to travel to Proxima B. It is unlikely we will even make it Mars in our lifetimes, or at least in the near future.

    • I agree with your reasoning about life on Proxima b as well as how there isn't very much information on the planet to be sure if there is life and how we are not qualified enough [ :) ] to say that there is or isn't life on it. I also agree that while it would be a big life changing experience, we would never get to go there nor to Mars since we are just now training people to go to Mars.

  • Ya I would go there for sure. I think the time in space would be a life changing experience. Would be cool to have something never touched by humans and exploring a new landscape and seeing how different everything is from earth.
