New Cameras Can Detect Cell Phone Use While Driving

Each year, about 25% of car crashes are due to drivers being distracted by their cell phones and 46% of crashes have it as a contributing factor. New South Wales, a state in Australia, is hoping to reduce the number of accidents like those, and have developed a camera that can detect when a driver is using a cell phone. These cameras continuously take pictures that their artificial intelligence will go back over to try to detect a phone. Then, if illegal use of a phone is detected, the picture will be sent to officials to be confirmed, so punishment can be sent out. However, New South Wales plans to only send out warnings for the first three months of its official use of the cameras and then move on to fines ranging from $350 to $460. During the camera's test trials, it had already caught more than 100,000 people illegally using their cell phones behind the wheel and the New South Wales Government expects it to catch many more and hopefully decrease the usage.

Questions

1. Do you think that the United States will eventually borrow the idea and implement these cameras in cities just like the stoplight cameras?

2. Do you think these cameras and the fines will be effective and what do you think will be the citizens' reactions to the cameras?

My Answers-

I think that the United States will very likely start to use the cameras to catch people because it's such a big issue and they do work. I think the people might get angry that the cameras are being used since so many people are guilty of using their phones and some people might dislike that cameras are catching people rather than police officers themselves.

  • Casey,

    You always impress. Well done!

  • I don't think people will like the idea that much because people text and drive all the time. I think after people see how it could be so efficent they might start to like it. I also think that the cameras will be effective in getting people fines and things.

  • I agree that the U.S. is going to take the idea it's in my eyes a good thing and a bad thing reason why it's a good thing they take people who at their phones all the time off the streets, it's a bad thing because it's just one more thing for them to fine you for.

  • I think that they will knowing how much stuff the United States buys and how much safer they know it will make traffic I think they will. I think they will cuase people won't want to keep getting tickets and risk getting there lisneces suspended from them so eventually they will stop and I don't think at first most people will not like them

    • It is pretty true that America likes to buy a lot, and it definitely shows if you look at our debt. But I think it would be a good investment and I think that it would be the local governments that would pay for them in their certain cities. It may take longer than expected to see a big decrease in the number of crashes due to phones, but I think eventually they would be effective and worth it.

  • Most likely they will add them. Just like in harlan they added the little things that check your speed around town. I think that these cameras will be affective and may even help bring driver safety up.

  • I defiently could see the United States using more cameras like that, do to the fact that their is a lot of uncaught crime in America. If we got those cameras it would defiently lower crime. But I can understand if people who not want to have those just do to privacy, but in the end I think it would be good.

    • I agree that if we used these cameras, the good would outweigh anything bad about them. I don't even think they are super expensive and they are pretty well built so they can be used during day and night and during nearly all bad weather conditions.

  • I think this is a great idea that people that fianlly came up with this kind of invetion that doeant allow to use phone while driving and on my opinion the organization that came up with this idea will expend their business and they will bring their idea to not only in USA but whole world. I hope that these cameras will be effective and will serve for people and also i hope that that will decrease the nember of accidents.

    • I like your idea of having other countries, besides just the United States, start to use the phone detecting cameras too. Having them mostly world wide could greatly prevent the number of phone related crashes each year like you said.
